Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I'm going to start on this xxx
project again tomorrow. I've been wrestling with it for hours and
I've gone cross-eyed and stale.

Place your cursor over one of the offending pictures, then click with your
right mouse button and select "delete." If that works, you can then use the
CTRL button to individually select other pictures to delete all at once.
You could also use the shift button, but I would be leery of that after
reading about all of your problems.

Now: I'm actually going to assume that you have already tried this
considering that you said you have been working on this problem for hours.
In that case, I would suspect a virus. Run a good virus checker and let it
check your entire system. That could take several hours, so you may want to
let it run at night when you are not using your computer. It can run "in
the background" (so you can use the computer for other processes), but it
can also slow everything down considerably.
