I don't know what British dentistry is like these days. I only know
that when I arrived in the States I found that US dentistry was way
ahead of its British counterpart. I hope to goodness it has vastly
improved.

You're correct - many people neglected their teeth because of fear of
the drill. No six-month checkups. No emphasis placed on
orthodontics, either. So, people often waited until severe pain drove
them to the dentist; consequently the offending tooth/teeth needed to
be extracted. I've often wondered whether things are better. I
sincerely hope so. Maybe someone in the UK can update me.
