Ever since the ancient Aztecs people have been doing this.

The Spanish were very happy with their conquest of both these New World
food ingredients, and to this day people are still drinking chocolate
with chili in it in Barcelona and Madrid. And in various other parts of
the former Spanish Empire, including western North America.
