On the subject of Cook's Illustrated sending an unasked for Baking book,

I sure wish I had this to read before calling them (on the same book
send) and waiting for their Return Postage lable for sending that Baking
book back a friend here would have very much enjoyed having. Their
phone person said something to the effect that the book was sent because
I had failed to check and return a refusal offer provided prior to the
auto-send, of which there was absolutely none. I am very careful to
refuse anything unwanted, so I do believe the phone person was simply
trained to lie along with offering the free return.
