Vijay,
Complex question here, but just to simplify a bit...
Typically in the Old world ie.Europe, wines are classified by region.
For example...Rioja, Bordeaux, Cote du Rhone, Chianti etc.
In the New World, North America, Australia, South Africa etc. wines
are clasified by varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Noir,
Syrah etc...
Getting into the types and subtypes ( I assume you mean reserve
bottlings, single vinyards/Cru designations and the like). This is not
something I can go into here, but the first book my wife bought me on
wine is one I still refer to often.
It is "The Essential Wine Book" by Oz Clarke, not terribly expensive
and a good primer into the world of wine. There are certainly other
reads out there...so perhaps you'll get some other suggestions as
well.
