The one in Scottsdale is in a strip mall...same for the one in
Torrance. The one in Memphis is also in a strip mall, but a more
upscale area.

I agree. I went to one Penzeys, and was talking to the salespeople
there, and one of them went into the back and pulled out a sample of
something that wasn't on the shelves or in the catalog yet. I forget
what we had been talking about that elicited that response, but I
enjoyed the interchange. I didn't end up getting that particular
herb/spice though....

I too love going around and smelling the various spices. Some are a
revelation, as to what really good spices smell like, and the
variations therein. I remember when I first smelled their cinnamon
varieties...WOW. Same with the ground ginger. Both of those really
impressed me, and that is when I really started getting most of my
spices there.
