If you look at the old ads for cigarettes, they were considered a health
aid. They were actually thought to be *good* for you. It wasn't until
about 50 years ago that the US government finally admitted that they
were bad for you. I remember it. My parents both smoked, and up until
then, nobody in authority would admit that it wasn't healthy. Between
the doctor saying that I was allergic to tobacco, and the Surgeon
General of the US finally saying that smoking tobacco was unhealthy, my
parents both quit.
