No, I was being literal. He was riding his mountain bike on a new
section of trail that has only been roughly cleared so far. He caught
the handlebar of his bike on a grapevine at the edge of the trail and
fell down the side of a rather large steep hill.

A chainring tattoo is a grease mark and/or series of puncture wounds to
the back of the calf caused by contact with the chainring of a bike,
usually during a crash.
