Convenience. The Cumby's is within walking distance. The big
grocerys are a mile or more.
It's a place to stop to pick up the newspaper, some gum, the second
cup of coffee in the morning. some folks stop there for a sandwich
when they've forgotten their lunch or whathaveyou. Snacks and sodas.
Last night it was a bottle of rubber cement to finish decorating the
boxes we packed the cookies in.
It's fewer steps to their dairy case to pick up a container of milk,
since they are not as enormous as the groceries. Also fewer chances
to find any impulse purchases. The cost of jumping in the car and
driving to the grocery for items like that would outweigh the savings
on price.
I don't use them that often, since I pass any number of stores on my
way home from work so it's no trouble to stop and pick up the half
dozen items on the shopping list that my family "can't do without."
In the inner-city and poorer neighborhoods, they do become the store
of choice, since if you don't have a car, they are what's available.
