I use the Thunderbird newsreader and find it's just fine for my needs.
It has decent filtering properties.
For a news server, I've been with Astraweb.
www.news.astraweb.com for 3
years. I bought their $10 25GB service and haven't even made a dent in
it. I don't do any binary groups so that $10 will be a lifetime supply
for me. I find their support to be quite good, too.
