The other problem is that they tend to fracture the beans along the cell
walls, instead of slicing the cells open.

That being said, even an el-cheapo whirly blade will make a HUGE
difference compared with buying coffee pre-ground. I wouldn't discourage
anybody from starting with a cheap whirly-blade, considering the
alternative.
