cutting racking wand losses

This is somewhat of a companion question to my previous post.....

By the time of bottling my one gallon batches are almost totally clear
of sediment, but there's still a dusting on the bottom of the carboy
sometimes, so I use a racking wand. I am getting a bit frustrated about
the amount I'm losing with this, much more is left behind by the
racking wand lees-shield than was sedimentary. Anyone have a reliable,
routine solution to this? So sad to waste any of a wine one has just
spent two years getting ready for bottle. If you're going to say
"filter it" please disregard and see previous post!

Thanks all

Sean

Sean,

I rack off as much as I can, using a block under one edge of the
container. Then I pour the dregs into the narrowest bottle they'll fit
into, and let it settle until I can recover whatever clear portion
develops.

........and then drink it presumably? Works for me!

And if you throw that into the fridge it will settle faster. Ice wine
bottles are great for this. I rack from small bottles with an old O2
hose, the ID is around 1/8" so the suction is very gentle and you can
get most all of the wine off.

Joe,

I thought I was doing good, but you've got me beat. A 1/8" siphon hose?
That must be some _real_ good wine you're making!

I'm cheap and I had a nasal canula package that was not sealed so it
couldn't be used for patients. I just cut off the canula and had a
nice thin hose that was 5 feet long. :o)

I use it for Limicello too, that is too expensive to waste. I waste
maybe an ounce...

I agree thats just what i do
