Default making white wine out of Grenache

I've heard of French white grenaches, but I always thought they were a specific
grenache blanc variety. Our local distributor now has some good California
central valley grenache grapes in stock, and I was thinking of making a white
or rose out of these red grapes. Is this reasonable? What might I expect?
Are the commercial white grenaches made from red grapes, or is that a different
grape?

Thanks,

Lee
