cab franc dying
 

I am located in southern ontario (Canada), close to the niagara grape
growing region. I recently heard an unverified rumor that cab franc vines in
this area are dying. I don't know the cause, or where the rumor started or
if it is even true. Is there anyone else who is associated with this area
who has heard or is experiencing this?

Jeff,

Try giving the Ontario Wine Council a call at 905-688-0990 and let us
know. Otherwise, we pick up our grapes from Reif Wineries at
Niagara-on-the-Lake in late Sept through Oct and I will try to find
something out at that time.

Jeff,

I'll take a guess that the last 2 winters have something to do with
it. Also the wet growing season that preceded it which produced alot
of fungus and alot less sunlight put the vines in a comprimising state
before the winter. I think you might see growers in the east take a
look at growing some of these vines on their own roots. Grafted vines
are REALLY frustrating when it comes to winter damage. Actually, if I
owned a commercial vineyard I would plant own rooted every other vine.
I also think your going to see a change in thinking about what can be
grown ECONOMICALLY in the northern east. For a while we didn't get a
REAL winter but the last 2 have proven some of the old timers right.
