Best book for beginner?

I'm about to retire at age 62.

I would really like to get into wine making in a serious way. I've
tried a couple of kits from Jim's Home Brew Supply in Spokane - but
both times I thought the results were sort of poor.

Can anyone who has a lot of experience recommend some good reading on
the subject? Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com both list a ton of
books. Which are really useful? Beginner's book?

Has there ever been a FAQ for this group?

How does one get started in this? Are there any other good newsgroups
on-topic. I did a search on "winemaking" and found this group as the
only one active.

I'm a total newbie, so I'm throwing myself on your mercy. Any advice
would be ENORMOUSELY appreciated. Thank you, Bob

Your best bet is to check Jack's site out -
http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/index.asp. If you are look at starting
from the beginning with country wines; I started with Terry Garey's "The joy
of Home Winemaking". Others may suggest other books for grapes. Welcome
and good-luck.

Best book for beginner?

I read several, actually, including a couple of British books written in the
early 70's that were as interesting for their cultural context as for what
they said about wine. The one that I bought, however, and which I felt was
quite readable, was Terry Garey's The Joy of Home Winemaking. There is a
website at:

http://www.joyofwine.net/

Just my .02... I ams still a bit new at this and there are lots of people
here know lots more about this than I!

Cheers,

Gabriel

Bob,

Here's a link to the FAQ, which was compiled by Don Buchan, and has been
redesigned by Steve Holdener.

http://www.malak.ca/rcw.faq.html

Also, see Lum Eisenman's site

http://home.att.net/~lumeisenman/

Another helpful site is Ed Goist's, for grape growing

http://vitfaq.vinic.com/gohome.html

These, along with Jack Keller's site, are an excellent start.

I'd recommend either "From Vines to Wines" by Jeff Cox, or "Home
Winemaking Step By Step" by Jon Iverson. The first one is even more
useful if you intend to grow your own grapes as well. I'm sure you'll
find either of these at both Amazon or B&N.

Best book for beginner?

Bob,

"Modern Winemaking" by Philip Jackisch (Cornell University Press)is an
excellent basic and reference book for home winemakers of grape wines.

Good luck,
Glen Duff
