Wine Cellar Demand
 

Hey,

I'm a student from the University of Auckland.
I'm doing an assignment based on wine cellars.
I'm wondering if you guys can help tell me what the demand for wine
cellars are.
How many bottles of wine on average do wine consumers have stored on
their house, 50, 100, 150 or more?
If I can get the basic idea of how many bottles of wine are kept in
each household I can have a rough idea of what the demand for wine
cellars are

I have about 200 bottles in the racks of my wine cellar and about 60 bottles
in crates. The bottles in crates are too young to drink, so I pack them up
out of sight for a few years until they mature. Then they go out on the
racks.

You are definately in the wrong place.

I think the avarage consumer and household has
not more as 20 bottles in their home.

We are winemakers and therefore many have a bigger
stock. I have about 300 in my cellar.

Most households, evben if they are winedrinkers
do not want /need a winecellar.

Wine Cellar Demand
 

Currently I have over 1,000. Yes we drink alot of wine. Usually 2 a day plus
wine I send to competitions.
In case you haven't figured it out YES I make wine. I have different racks
for different regions. i.e.. California, Italian, Chilean and fruit wines.

I was thinking the same thing.

Mine is 4' x 12' and holds close to 1000 bottles, I counterstack on
the bottom.

In the US I would guess better than 95% have less than a case at
home; wine is still pretty event driven here.

I disagree with your last sentence. While the
demand for wine coolers and extra refrigerators may
be driven by storage, the demand for wine cellars
is driven by wealth, cultural sophistication, climate,
soil, avocation, and the inability or lack of desire
to build your own.

In the States, the further north you go, the colder
it gets and the harder the ground gets. Houses in
the "Land of the damnyankee Show' often have
basements. There are few urban areasin the southern
hemisphere that experience the cold winters of the
northern hemisphere, e.g., the southern part of NZ's
South Island, the OZ's New England Plateau, and OZ's
Snowny Mountains. Even then the NE Plateau is the
only one that is really urban.

If you presume that wealth is a significant independent
variable, you might consider a mailing to houses in
urban zip codes with high income levels inquiring of
them their wine cache, the existance of a wine cellar,
the desire for a wine cellar, etc.

I have about 108 on display, and about 200+ in cases.

Wine Cellar Demand
 

I think I have to agree with the other posters. While it is certainly
legitimate to ask how many bottles of wine are on hand in the average
household, I think the answer would be in single digits, and the vast
majority of households would have no use for a wine cellar. I'm not
sure that tells you much. At the far end of the distribution are the
kind of folks who post here. I think I have racking for about 1000
bottles, and they are nearly full.

I think a better way to look at this is to ask, at what point do
consumers begin to want/need a wine cellar? Probably at least a
couple hundred bottles, I would think. Then you could attempt to find
out how many households have that many bottles on hand. There clearly
is a market for wine cellars, but it's a niche market - it's only
going to appeal to a very small segment of society.
