Information on Gervin & its products?
 
Does Gervin have its own website? (Searching for "Gervin yeast" and
such only turns up sites that sell it.)

Also, I heard recently that another company had bought Gervin ---
does anyone have information about this?

Hi Adam.

I am on pretty good terms with my local winemaking shop and I recently
asked similar questions of him. He said: "I think the guy that ran
Gervin had a heart attack and couldn't run the show anymore. I
believe another UK brand has have bought them out - I can't remember
if that brand is Youngs or Ritchie. Youngs' yeasts are said to be
unbranded Lalvin products." I was pretty gutted because I love Gervin
products and have been using them since I started making wine.

Gervin doesn't seem to have a website and the company itself seems/
seemed to be pretty small. I tried ringing the phone number on their
yeast sachets but there was never anyone around to answer - I think in
hte end the number was disconnected.

I hope that slew of maybes is of some use...

That's interesting. I'll check with my local brewing & winemaking
shop too.

I was in my local brewing & winemaking shop today, and noticed that
all the formerly Gervin spaces on the shelf have either Young's or
Ritchie's products.

I asked if one of those companies had taken over Gervin. The lady
(co-owner, I think) said that she wasn't sure who had taken it over;
that they (the two shops) were currently selling the closest
equivalents they could find from other suppliers; that she thought the
Gervin products would be available again in the near future (but
probably at higher prices, you know how it is when a company is bought
out); and that other customers had been asking for Gervin yeasts (in
particular) too.

I recently came across this blog post:

Since Vina, the owner of the Gervin brand, called in the
administrators in March we have been unable to obtain any stocks of
these yeasts.

We have been told repeatedly over the past few months that these
will be available within days but none have arrived as yet.

If they are produced again to the high standards originally set by
Gerry Fowles, which would mean being packed in nitrogen flushed
sachets to ensure both a long shelf life and high viability, we
shall again be stocking the full range.

At the moment we do not know when or if this will be. In the
meantime if we receive orders for strains of Gervin yeast which are
unavailable we will substitute with the nearest equivelant yeast
from the Lalvin range.
