Anyone know of a California retailer who can get / carries wines from
M. Chapoutier? We've asked Chapoutier directly, but they say they can
not ship to us because of their exclusive distribution. But the only
distributor I can find, Paterno (out of Chicago), seems to have no
relationships in California.

Have a look at some of the listings in winesearcher.com to see if any
stores might be local for you:
http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/Ch...A-CA/USD/A/-/0

Some of the listings are auctions, though, keep in mind.
Good luck!

I've seen some of Chapoutier's wines for sale in Beverages & More (aka
BevMo), but I'd expect that you could find them in most large wine
retailers. Since you seem to be near Sacto, have you tried Corti Bros?

I tried using this thing:

http://www.paternowines.com/locator/Default.aspx

and got 22 retail locations in the la area, and 19 in sf.

the first one that I found a website for was in la:

http://www.accountwizard.com/clients...idelink=search

and they have 4 bottles eadh of 2 items. You can take home all 8 for
only a grand, plus tax.

Certainly the 3 retailers I use most in CA (Wine Exchange, Woodland
Hills, and Premier Cru) all carry Chapoutier products. Whether they
have exactly what you're looking for or are willing to order is
certainly a separate issue.Good luck!

Paterno distributes wines, at least in Southern California, through Southern
Wine & Spirits, and their wines are definitely available at retail here.
Their catalog lists some 30 Chapoutier offerings. Try www.wine-searcher.com
for on-line retailers too.

I think the basic sales philosophy of Paterno is an account can't get the
gems like Chapoutier unless x amount of Santa Margherita and other wines
they push are ordered. When I was at retail in MD Paterno would not send
current vintages of Ratti wines--they were reserved for DC, NY, Boston,
Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco----to get some Ratti Barolo Marcanesco and
fresh Dolcetto we had to commit to x cases of Corvo from Sicily---at the
wholesaler's request I contacted the top Italian stores in the state so the
wholesaler could justify their order. The new Paterno salesperson at the
time worked with me to bring other wines into Maryland but he wasn't meeting
his Corvo quota and was fired.

Southern is in many states and periodically Paterno gives part of their line
to another wholesaler to boost sales in both companies. You need to find a
shop that does a lot of business with Southern and Paterno in particular.
Caution if the Paterno rep sees that a store is carrying too many other
Northern Rhones, he or she will make reordering difficult.
