TN Ch. Lafite-Rothschild 1966
Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1966 has been somewhat variable in quality.
Michael Broadbent has tasted it many times over the years and has noted considerable bottle variation. It, as many 1966s, tends to be a bit lean and it is not the highly concentrated style that gets high marks from Parker. I am nearing the end of a case bought many years ago, and I have noted some bottle variation, but not as extreme as has Broadbent. The wine has peaked and has started what appears to be a very slow decline. The color still has quite a bit of scarlet and shows only moderate age around the rim. There still are rather dry tannins, but they now are smooth. There is the usual cassis, a bit of cedar, and a slight iron-like mineral taste that many have noted in Lafite. The wine now is rather smooth drinking. It is less intense than most now expect Bordeaux first growths to be. It is still a very good wine with food, although it would not stand out at the top in a blind tasting alone. |
