Bay Area B&Bs
 

My wife and I will be in San Francisco in late September for a
conference. In that we have never toured the California wine country,
we'd like to play hooky for a couple of days and do some tours. Does
anyone have any suggestions for a nice, not too expensive B&B? Any "must
visit" wineries?

You'll have to be more specific about where in wine country you want to
go. From SF, you can go to Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Monterey and Paso
Robles -- and with more effort you can reach Santa Barbara and Amador.
Also, what kind of wines do you like, and how many days do you have to
visit?

Thanks Mark. We are pretty open to destination and wines, but were
thinking of Napa or Sonoma (relatively close to the Bay Area). Some of
our favorite wines are from Paso Robles, and we would love to visit the
region on a separate trip but that's a bit of a trek from SF.

My recommendation is a B&B called "The Gables" in Santa Rosa. It is on a
"busy" road, but very convenient to Sonoma County wineries, and there are
discount liquor stores nearby (do't buy at a winery unless it isn't
available in stores).

The selection of wineries is incredible. I avoid Napa because the road is a
"Parking Lot" on the weekends. There are a number of small wineries that
don't ship a lot - the links on other postings provide links to lists.
