I keep learning more new things about my e-mail software. For instance, all
I have to do is open an offensive post, then go to the kill file rule I set
up recently..... click on "add Criterion" and whaddaya know???.........One
more 'from' address in the kill file. Only takes a second.

It'sa even easier than that with my newsreader. When I see some childish
drivel, I press CTRL-K, and then click on the Okay button and hop, every
post from them disappears into thin air.

And it works just as well for the morons who reply three times to the same
troll. I'm considering adding a couple of regulars who haven't learnt self
discipline.

Yes I'm being harsh, but Dale didn't post his "guidelines" yesterday to
waste bandwidth, but to remind us of something.

And even easier with mine, I‘ve discovered, it has a button on the icon bar
specifically dedicated to kill-filing — click it and it‘s done. This seems to be
one of the advanatages of not using a standard machine, along with it being virtually
impossible to pick up viruses because the OS is wholly different.

My newsreader doesn't even need the [Ctrl] button, [K] is just
enough ;-)

I use a very simple newsreader, Outlook Express, and the procedure for
adding senders to a Kill File is a bit tedious unless I have missed
something (entirely possible :-). I wonder if you and perhaps Ian and
others could tell me which readers you are using?

If memory serves me right, typing [Ctrl]+[F3] gives you the
complete posting including headers, where under "X-Newsreader"
one can see the type of reader a posting has been edited with.

That's worth knowing except that, now you've told me what to look for,
the heading is "User Agent" with my version of OE. You can also go
with right click|Properties|Details and see "User Agent" again if you
are a mouser like me.

I use Agent, and having a quick look at Michael's headers, I noticed that he
uses (I did a quick cut and paste job)

User-Agent: Xnews/5.04.25

Agent is really designed to be used as an offline reader. You go on line,
download all your messages and then read and reply, before going on line to
send. I think it's the best of the batch for that. If you've got broadband,
or unlimited access in some other way, then its advantages are less marked.
(Agent is available in two forms, "Free agent" and "Agent 2.??" currently,
though I'm not sure whether free agent has kill filters).

When I last used Free Agent ( a fair number of years ago) the
absence of killfile capability was one of the things that
distinguished it from the full product.

Whether that's still the case, I'm not sure.

If I'm not mistaken, one of Agent's disadvantages is that it
won't handle multiple newsservers. I personally prefer Outlook
Express, but even if I didn't, since I use five different
servers, that would rule it for me.
