TN: Easter/Passover weekend- Loires, Pomerol, Burg, Sicily
No seder, but for first night of passover we had gefilte fish from Epstein's deli, matzah ball soup, a tiny hunk of brisket, tzimmes (carrots with prunes), and the 2015 COS Frappato
Very berry, herbs and a little barnyard. Light, fresh, fun and funky. B+/B Saturday was scallops, oysters on half shell, broccoli rabe, and the 2013 Cazin Cour-Cheverny. A wooly note that I almost mistake for corkiness at first, but with air its definitely more damp wool. Green apple, lemon, and wax. Lighter rendition of Romarantin. B/B+ 2016 Serge Laloue Sancerre (375) Grass, catpee, more grass. Tastes like undercropped NZ SB. C+/C Easter lunch at Betsys sister, we did deviled eggs (with capers or summer truffles) and leg of lamb ( garlic/rosemary/ anchovy/lemon paste). They had taramasalata, Ottolenghi sweet potatoes, salmon, brussels sprouts, and salad 2016 Karine Lauverjat Sancerre This is more like it, just a touch pf grass over lime and apple, good mineral finish. B+ 1989 Domaine de LEglise (Pomerol) I double-decanted at home, wasnt too thrilled on opening- reticent fruit, a very mature ashtray note. But on serving a much more attractive wine with solid black plum fruit, a light mocha note, and leather. Less ashtray than cigarbox, best is last. Nice Pomerol texture. Nothing exciting, but satisfying. B+ Home that night for last dinner before kitchen demolition starts, Bobby Flay chicken with mint sauce, sweet potato, salad, and the 2015 Jane & Sylvain Passetoutgrains. Richer than most PTG, more PN-ish than Gamay-ish, but maybe a function of the vintage. Rich cherry fruit, hint of framboise, a little herb and pine. Fun. B Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency. |
