Weird wine names
Just received a sample from d'Arenberg wines - yet to try. The name is
"Noble Botryotinia ****elinia" a semillon sauvignon blanc blend. Thought it was a joke at first but Wikipedia says http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botryotinia_****eliana "Botryotinia ****eliana is a plant pathogen, and the causal agent of gray mold disease. The specific epithet was named by mycologist Heinrich Anton de Bary in honor of another mycologist, Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold ****el. This species is better known as its anamorph, Botrytis cinerea." Cheers! Martin |

Wow! Very weird in *two* senses: 1. The ****eliana part of the name 2. The wine being named after a pathogen, rather than having a brand name or named after its grapes or the location where it was grown. Not only have I never heard of Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold ****el, but I never know that Botrytis cinerea had another name. -- Ken Blake |
