Default Port in tights

From a BBC article on Portugal wine makers:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programme...nt/8420787.stm

Expert Tim Stanley-Clarke says port is "perfectly filtered" through
nylon tights.

My guess is it is not some weird fetish, but making use of the fine mesh
of chemically neutral nylon to catch cork pieces and sediment.

Is that the case?
