Default Grape "variety" or "varietal"

Are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, etc., grape
"varieties" or "varietals"?

My ear says "varieties" but many folk in the wine world say
"varietals".

What's the correct usage?
