Romania, Moldova wine? wineries?

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Romania and Moldova, have any of you being there?

Can you please tell me what are considered the best wines and wineries?

What are the wine regions called?

What are their grape varieties?

Thanks,

Mario

Mario Mario, here you go again, we sure missed you for a year or so,
but here you are back with your easily identified style, even woithout
signature I would have recognized you.

Only 4 questions, definitely below your average per post, but
crossposted on 5 newsgroups?

You have Google, you have books surely, maybe you should use them and
save your questions on the NG for more specific items.

Sigh

Look for Bull's Blood, it's from Hungary and Romania.

Egri Bikaver, you mean...
And it's Hungarian, not Romanian.
Good wine.

Those not in Romania & Moldova.

Actually the Czech Republic has some interesting reds, Frankova &
Vavrinishki(sp). In the Cold War Premiat from Romainia had decent QPR wines
and there are some of the traditional varietals that can be a nice quaff,
but in general Hungary & The Czech Republic are more promising,

The E. Bikaver is certainly Hungarian. We discovered this wine at
teh International Wine And Food Festival at the Epcot Center years ago
(1993?). The nice European ladies there advised that this was a style of
wine produced in Hungary and Romania, and so called due to it's intense
red color. It's a blend of four varietals, two of which I can't even
pronounce. There's more than one label of Bull's Blood in the region,
but the Bikaver is all I've been able to find stateside.

Egri Bikaver is Hungarian for ... Bull's Blood ;-)

All the above is correct except the "Hungary and Romania" part ;-)
I don't know of such a wine in Romania!
I've drink it at the Taverna (uca Vaci) but never in Romania.
But hey, I am not a specialist (although I have about 60 bottles of pre-1960
wines) so maybe a Romanian friend could help us here.

I believe that just "Bikaver" means Bull's Blood. "Egri" is a
reference to the town of Eger, and "Egri Bikaver" means "Bull's
Blood of Eger."

BB is a well-known Hungarian product, but the unique one is the dessert wine
Tokay. It'll never be cheap at the top levels, but you might used this
occasion to do a little tasting at the source and cradle one or two superb
bottles in your carry-ons on return. A very pleasant trip to take from
Budapest is the day-long visit to Lake Balaton and its wineries. A delicious
local lunch is usually included, with several different wines.

A good idea, except that the OP is *not* asking for Hungarian wine...

Probably, I am not sure as I don't speak Hungarian:-)
If some Romanian friend who speaks Hungarian could help us...

OK, I'll have go he Murfatlar Late Harvest Chardonnay is a good QPR
even here in Finland and not a bad dessert wine in any case.

However, my limited experiences with other Romanian wines have not been
so good.

Cheers,
