TN Vallet Freres Burgundy tasting
Hello all.
Just a brief note before the notes. I've often read the very helpful and knowledgeable tasting notes on this newsgroup and have therefore decided to have a go myself. I am a member of my local wine society down here in Dorset, England and have been attending meetings for nearly three years now. I must grade myself as an enthusiast rather than a person with an educated palette or an extended vocabulary. However here goes. On Tuesday 4th November Bernard Vallet attended a meeting of the Dorset Wine Society and brought a number of his burgundies both red and white. Monsieur Vallet conducted the tasting together with an extended explanation as to the winemaking techniques involved as well as terrior etc and the fact that there is no such thing as poor vintage....only a different vintage....my thoughts ran to wallet rather than Vallet at this point My method at these tastings is to try and evaluate each wine based on my first impressions before the speaker has time to tell me what I'm supposed to be experiencing. All wines are from Vallet Freres. White Wines Bourgogne Blanc 2001: Quite nutty and fresh, restrained yet pleasant. A little too acidic. Auxey Duresses 2000: Quieter on the nose. More complex. Less acidic. Very nice old world style. Meursault 2001: Fantastic complexity on the nose, fragrant and delicate. Very classy. I would think this wine would need a careful food matching as the complexities are quite subtle. Red Wines Cotes de Nuits Villages 1999. This wine was from Fixin. Full of flavour, a tad rustic. Not thin but rather too acidic. Pernand Vergelesses 1996. This was my favourite wine of the evening. More restrained ont he nose than the above wine. Much smoother and more together. The wine has super balance and length and is just beginning to soften. M. Vallet suggested that this is just about ready to drink but clearly thought that more patience would be rewarded. I'm afraid my bottle will not last past the Xmas festivities. Beaune Les Epenottes 1er Cru 1999. Young with plenty of fruit. Quite tannic although I loved the flavour. The first wine of the tasting that clearly needs bottle age. Gevrey Chambertin Clos de la Justice 1999. Less forward on the nose than the Beaune, However tastes weightier and I think may need less time. Maybe as its not 1er cru?? Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru Cazetiers 1987. Restrained on the nose. Sweet fruit. Lovely Balance. A very classy wine. Vosne Romanee 1983. Complex and classy wine. Fully mature. At approaching £40 a bottle not the best value wine I've ever tasted but very different to the earlier wines. Less fruit, more complexity....sort of a brown wine is how I would describe it. See I told you my vocabulary is limited At this point of the evening, a meal is served together with a red and white 'supper' wines of everyday quality. A nice way of ending the evening although these wines don't end of with much serious scrutiny as many of the attendees do not spit the tasting wines and most folks are fairly merry by now. Best wishes to all Alex Hayne |

Thanks for the notes. To me, sounds like both your palate and your vocabulary
are just fine! Dale Dale Williams Drop "damnspam" to reply |
