Default Riedel Glasses

I was wondering if anyone has any Riedel Glasses and if they could recommend
one. I predominantly drink Shiraz and Bordeaux, with a little Rioja and
Cab/Merlot thrown in.

The Riedel range is just so huge, its scary for me to select something. I
was considering the:

Vinum: 416/30
Vinum Extreme: 444/0

Any suggestions/experience/recommendations?

I've been very happy with the Vinums. If you bring one of those four wines
over to my house, we'll drink it out of 416/0's. If I bring one of the four
to your house and you wheel out either 416/30's or 444/0's, I won't be
insulted

If you are looking for Riedel glasses at a good price online, you can try
the Wine Merchant of Raleigh, NC. They discount Riedel at 30 % everyday and
though October they are an additional 10% off:

http://winemerchantraleigh.com/ic/riedel

The "Riedel Vinum Chianti Classico, Zinfandel" lists for $19.90, but rings
up for $11.90 with the 40% discount. I do not believe that there is a
minimum and I am not sure of the shipping charges since I can buy local.
The one thing that I do not like about the web site is that the discounted
price is only seen after you press the Buy button. Until you press it, you
see the list price.

Please note: I am not affiliated with the Wine Merchant. I am a just a
satisfied customer and wanted to pass on a good deal. BTW: I am picking up
some martini glasses later this week ...

I work in a retail shop that sells Riedel and this is below my cost, so I
think that it's a great deal even if you wind up paying shipping.

The overture series are fine if you want a good, everyday glass but the
investment in Vinum I think is worth the money. We use the following
glasses:

Sauvignon Blanc (new style) - most whites, including dessert wines
Montrachet/Chardonnay (for older whites)
Bordeaux - Just about any red, except Pinot Noir
Burgundy - Burgundies and Pinot Noirs
Port - Tawny and vintage port
Champagne flute - all sparkling wines
Single Malt Scotch

I am considering investing in some Chianti/Zinfandel glasses, but the
Bordeaux glass works fine.

My personal opinion is that it is a bit overkill to have much more than
this, but to each his own. I also prefer the simple elegance of the Vinum
series, but we sell the heck out of the Extreme and Wine series as well.

Cheers!

I would recommend the Extreme for 2 reasons, 1) you can use them everyday
and not worry so much about breaking them. 2) I like the shape better for
wine swirling...You really can't go wrong with any of the choices. Good
drinking...

I have little teeny tiny SB glasses. Are these "old style" Vinums? I don't
see them advertised any more.

Are these worth the expense? I've been drinking single malt out of everyday
beverage glasses from Macy's cellar. In addition: are the Vinums
appropriate for Scotch served OTR?

Interesting, do you mean that the Extreme is a thicker glass than the
standard Vinum (ie. less brittle and prone to breakage)?

If you are referring to the small, tulip shaped glass, then yes these are
the old style. I never cared for them personally. They are actually still
available; they call them something else now, but I don't remember what.

I think that they are worth the money. I wasn't wild about scotch until I
tried it in one of these at a Riedel seminar.... now I tend to drink it
fairly regularly. I'm not sure what you mean served OTR.

They're the same shape as the Chard glasses. The stem is a little shorter;
the bowl is noticeably smaller. I think the model number is 416/3 (or maybe
/33, or maybe /33 is the new ones?).

Sorry, that's "on the rocks."

I've been very happy with the Vinum 416/30 Syrah/Shiraz glasses. They are
quite heavy and stand up to a lot of wear & tear. The only problem is that
you may need to clean them with a brush because the bowl is quite deep and
narrower at the top than say, a bordeaux glass. However I'm not convinced
that the different shapes of bowl are as important as Riedel make out but
think, as long as the bowl is reasonably large, the thinner the edge the
better. so perhaps a good strategy might be to buy half a dozen 416/30 at
discount and also just one 'sommeliers' 400/00, 400/0 or 400/30 just for you
when not entertaining, but take good care of it.
