I saw a bottle of raspberry wine at Trader Joe's,
with their label. $8, 750 ml. Worth a fling? -- Rich |

I think it is worth buying a bottle. I lived in Germany 30 years ago and
used to buy strawberry sparkling wine (Erdbeer Sekt), and my wife and I enjoyed it from time to time. Give it a try. Mike Hagley "RichD" > wrote in message ... >I saw a bottle of raspberry wine at Trader Joe's, > with their label. $8, 750 ml. > > Worth a fling? > > -- > Rich |

I think the best fruit wines in the US are bottled under the "Chaucer's" label by Bargetto Winery in Soquel, CA if you can get them. They used to make a great plum wine, but their source was orchards in what is now the Silicon Valley. I don't know whether to be sad or happy... |

So they probably still have ready access to all those Central Valley and Salinas Valley orchards. Mark Lipton -- alt.food.wine FAQ: http://winefaq.cwdjr.net |

There are several fruit wines made around the country, and like grape wines the quality of them is all over the map. You have had answers concerning some west coast ones. An example from Missouri is: http://www.montelle.com/ . They make two raspberry wines. One is called red raspberry, is slightly sweet, and sells for US$13.42 per bottle. The other is a "port type" called Framboise that is sweet and sells for $18.98 per 375ml half bottle. They also make a strawberry wine. I have never tasted their fruit wines. I have had their peach eau de vie which is in the style of an eau de vie from Europe. It takes 8 pounds of ripe peaches to make one 375 ml bottle, and is rather decent. The company will ship to many areas of the US. |

That's pretty steep. Sweet wines aren't my style anyway. > They also make a strawberry wine. I have never tasted > their fruit wines. The SF Chronicle ran an article about a year ago, that fruit wines are making a comeback, after being scorned for a very long time. (remember that peach wine you made as a kid?) But there's not much info, no one publishes reviews. -- Rich |

The wineryand tasting room is just a couple of blocks up Main St. (which is not *the* main street. *The* main street is Soquel Drive. Go figure.) Jim |

I hadn't realized that Bargetto was in Soquel, as I mostly remember seeing signs for it while traversing the Pacheco Pass on Hwy 152. I guess that I should've Googled before responding.
