TN Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1988, de Vogue

I bought the Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1988, de Vogue shortly after
release in the US, and it has been stored properly. This bottle was
#00161. There were no cork issues, and the fill still was very high. I
opened the first of 6 bottles several years ago and thought the wine
needed more time. This is the second bottle, and the wine has evolved.

At 20 years old, the wine is still a very dark color, especially for a
Musigny, and there is very little evidence of age around the rim. This
was a quite tannic wine when young, and it also had plenty of acid.
The medium tannins and ample acidity are still there, but they are now
fairly well resolved. The fruit is mainly black cherry with hints of
other mixed fruits, and there is spice and a bit of floral character.
Since the wine does not seem to be drying out, I think more complex
fruit and floral character may develop with more age. I likely will
next taste the wine in about 5 years. Wines such as this are very
difficult to evaluate when young or even at middle age. I find it
about as difficult to follow as was the Mouton 1970 which was rather
harsh when young, but has now developed very well and sells for much
more than it did only a few years ago.
