Default Tracing China Wine Culture through History

Wine plays an important role in China, which is revealed not only in wedding party and funeral, but also in grand festivals during Chinese people’ year. New Year’s Eve is payed more attention by the Chinese People. On that day, the Chinese family gether together to have New Year’s Eve family dinner, which is the richest feast during one year. No matter the poor or the wealthy, no matter wine drinkers or abstainers, wine is a necessery part in New Year’s Eve family dinner. From the second day of the first month of the luner new year, people begin to pay a new year call from one family to another. During this process, the host will banquet their friends or relatives with wine and food to wish a happy new year. Therefore, people stress great importance to the appearance of wine. They always ascribe the origin of wine brewing to one saint, worshiping this person as the ancestor of wine.

In China, the wine inventer was Du Kang, which was widely spreaded. According to the description of the extant authoritative books in China, Du Kang was living in Xia Dynasty. The wine brewed by him was called as “Shujiu Liquor”( a kind of wine made from Gaoliang cereal). The fierce and powerful man in Donghan Dynasty, also Wei WuDi after that time, CaoCao also expressed his feelings in his poetic essay “ Duan Ge Xing” by writing “sing facing wine to think about how long will my lifetime last?” At last, he chanted “ how to get rid of my grief? The only solution is to drink Du Kang liquor”.

There is also another legend that people thought wine brewing should be traced to Yi Di, the daughter of Da Yu who contributed to control the flood disaster in antient China. It is passed on that by lengend during the reign of Da Yu in Xia Dynasty, Yi Di invented to brew wine. It is said that the wine brewed by Yidi tasted quite sweet so that Da Yu felt pleasently surprise and couldn’t believe it was a truth.

However in the traditional Chinese medical science books, the invention time of wine was forwarded from the Yellow Emperor Period, which was written in “The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine”. The Yellow Emperor is the common ancestor of whole Chinese nation. During his regin period, a lot of inventions appeared. The scene that the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo talked about wine brewing indicated that people in that times had already master this technic.

The birth of China wine(liquor) with legend storries makes the whole world crazy. Among the extant wine, the most antient China’s wine and that was protected best towards its tradition is China’s national essence ----Wuliangye Whitq Liquor. Wuliangye (means five-cereal wine) is made from five kind of material that is Gaoliang cereal, rice, sticky rice, wheat and corn. Driven by “BaoBaoQu”(a kind of sugar fermenter), Wuliangye is brewed in old cellars through years’ ferment and meticulous blend. The invention of “Bao Bao Qu” saw hundreds of years development of Wuliangye. Her ancient cellar group dated from Ming Dynasty is one of the World Culture Heritages. Wuliangye adopts five cereal as her material to best combine the essence of these five cereal so that she can avoid the defects of “single flavor and bad mouthfeel”,which always appear in other kinds of white liquor made from only one or threee kinds of material. All of those special brewing technics formed her own style with “longlasting fragrance, deep and pure flavor, sweet mouthfeel, harmony and clean flavor, especially full wine taste”. Therefore Wuliangye has been keeping public praise for hundreds of years.

Earlier when she stepped into Panama for the first time, Wuliangye had fancinated the whole world with her dreaming flavor. Currently she has already topped the world famous wine. In all kinds of high ranking bars in European and American countries, to drink Wuiangye has become a symbol to prove one’s distinguished status. Confucius Memorial Ceremony that attracts worldwide attention has chose Wuliangye, the nation’s essence, as their sacrificial wine, which indicates the tight combination of modern wine culture and China’s Confucian Culture. It is in this sense that Wuliangye has been not only a renowned brand or a kingkung in wine industry, but also has gradually become a symbol of Chinese culture. Using her own splendidness ,Wuliangye is cotinuing to write China’s magnificent history with five-thousand years.
