Default What People Thought About Forks

It's hard to imagine that until about four hundred years ago, European
people ate everything with their fingers. When a few people started
using forks in England, everyone else thought the idea of using tools
to eat was totally ridiculous. - from the Food History section of

Yeah, sure. And they kept dogs around to deal with the scraps and to
serve as finger wipes.

Actually from what I've read cultures many years before did use
utensils. I don't have a site but I think it was the Egyptians.
Cultures changed and they got away from it. And yes, the English did
start using them again as the type of foods they ate changed. I think
I might have read this in a clone book by Todd Wilbur. (Maybe)

The Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork seems reliable
and mentions Henry Petroski, The Evolution of Useful things (1992).
Petroski is always worth reading.

At least some in England used a small spatula instead of a fork for a
time. Forks were used as cook's tools in Roman times, and spoons of one
sort or another were dining implements.

The La Russe Gasstronomique has an interesting article on this, some
went so far as to condemn it as sinful and against the will of god, if
we were meant to use tools to eat with .....

A equally absurd argument was made about umbrellas, using them was
against gods will that we get wet.

Though i do like the idea of plates and bowls made of bread.

Depending on your age and/or location Three Dog Night could be either a rock
band or a weather report. In my case it's both
