Tawny Port seems to me to be God's icing on the cake of creation.
Any recommendations....I really don't care about exotic descriptions or very pricey vintages. Just something you really like and approximate price. List one or a few. I'm sure you input will help others to try new items. Thanks ahead! Joe Peach |

Although not a true Port (and sadly not available in PA anymore is "Old Benson"), I bought a bottle some time back and found an excuse to open it...this review seems to sum it up perfectly: Rosemount Tawny Port Solera Aged Old Benson Fine Old NV 97 Points Wine Spectator Dark, sweet and exotic--a sexy wine dripping with toffee, incense, Brazil nut, rose petal, caramel and coffee flavors that swirl around the core of black cherry. A fully rounded wine that lingers long after each sip. Extraordinary dessert wine. Drink now. 3,000 cases made. -HS In one word, Yum! Wow, that's it!
I should have remembered how to do that. I found a great Australian "Yulumba Clocktower" for I think about $10, it was great. I bought up the remaining 2 cases around the state. I noticed a few bottles on the shelves at the Bryn Mawr PA store, and bought one (your recommendation was too good to pass up). Won't open it for a while as we have a few open bottles already, but looking forward to trying it. The link Eonavich sent said there were five at that store, when in fact there were two, which is par for the antiquated inventory system the state uses. If you are going to try to source any from the state I would do it sooner rather than later. Regards, Jon |

I called the store at the Pleasant Hills location and asked them to get me 5 from the stores that still had them. God only knows if they are bright enough to find the "missing" ones. I gave them two stores that had the largest quantity...well I might end up with none and possibly 5. However I went on line and found them at a few places that ship to PA as a backup. Please trust me, I'm not an aficionado by any means. I have tried about 30 tawny ports and maybe 15+ regular ones. I have never been able to bring out "all" the flavors the "experienced" speak of, but I have found out what pleases me and what excites me. Take my recommendations with a grain of salt, I'm sure I won't let you down, but then again I'm easier to please then most I read about. Hey, if Cool-Aid gave me a buzz, I'm sure I find a flavor I liked...LOL.. Thanks, I would expect any recommendable Tawny to start around $20+ (but I have found some really, really good ones slightly under $15). $35 is half a tank of gas now days or 1/2 bag of groceries, movie for 4 on budget night, 2 mediocre dinners with a non-alcoholic drinks...etc. One great bottle of Tawny Port ($35) = a few days of great sipping, memories, experiences and telling others about it...LOL... It was relatively inexpensive, and at least one 'real-world' recommendation is better than none at all. I've had good luck with Rosemount products in the past, too. My taste in port are rather pedestrian anyway. My favorite so far is the Graham 10 YO. I've been working on a bottle of Valley of the Moon Port, which is a ruby port, but not too bad. Looking forward to trying the Old Benson when this is gone. Hope you are able to source some. Jon |
