Default NYT: QPR Argentinian Malbecs

Eric Asimov's article in today's NY Times focuses on cheaper Malbecs
from Argentina. As part of his article, he makes the point (that I've
personally arrived at, too) that often the cheaper wines of a producer
will be more appealing as they aren't so heavily manipulated and more
about the fruit itself. Because I've rarely, if ever, been very
impressed by a Malbec from Argentina, I would be interested in hearing
from others of any wines from this article that they've liked.

I've often experienced the fun twist of preferring the "base" wine to
the luxury cuvee, in a variety of areas (CdP and Tuscany come to
mind).
That said, the best Argentinan Malbecs I've ever had were also the
most expensive, the Achaval Ferrer single vineyard wines. Would
probably be classified as "modern," but I thought them solid and not
tarted up.

T be honest the Malbec wines from Argentina never really excited me
much. They all tasted pretty much the same and it wasn't a wine that
interested me. I would agree that the ones that were "different" were
usualy heavily maniuplated. This seems to be the case in any new wine
area that's trying to catch up with the rest of the wine world.

The other night I had the 2003 Cobos Malbec with a NY Strip. It was
incredible. I would hardly refer to it as inexpensive as it was one of the
most expensive wines on their list. It was in a restaurant so it can expect
to go in a retail shop for about a third of the $150 wine list price.
Hardly cheap, but after having it I would gladly pay $50 a bottle for more.

I tend to agree with you Mark. A few really high end Malbecs not value
driven have been enjoyable but price wise I can do better. The one I get
the most often at other folks houses is Navarro Correas. It is OK but
nothing great.
