TN: good to disappointing (Burg, Loire, MSR)
 

2004 Marc Colin "La Combe" Bourgogne
Sweet pear fruit with a bit of apple blossom and vanilla, nice flavors,
but it somehow seems a bit empty. I don't expect basic Bourgognes to be
models of concentration, but this borders on dilution, and there's no
need for that in this vintage. B-

2002 JJ Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett
Due to plastic corks (some bottles have plastic, some natural, this was
an extruded cork) I'm trying to finish off these. This seems sweeter
than last bottle, very peachy with just a hint of lime. Not complex,but
a good deal at well under $10. Went well with some chicken-jalapeno
sausage, as well as grilled (storebought) polenta and squash. B

2004 Clos Roche Blanche Gamay (Touraine)
I'm usually the first (well, in the first 100) to sing the praises of
CRB, but a previous bottle didn't thrill me, though I liked. But I
didn't finish this over 3 nights, and the rest went into vinegar crock.
Good acidity, nice bright raspberrym and strawberry fruit. But what was
a nice herby edge before has gone into a somewhat weedy/funky green
thing. Reminds me of houseplants- or maybe houseplant food. Other
bottle was better, this is for me a C.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent
wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't
drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no
promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Thanks for the warning, Dale. I think I might pass on this year's
version and put my shekels into more Bojo instead. And I'm gonna have to
find some Christoffel, too.

It is interesting to read this tasting note. I found a great wine shop in
Barcelona that sells by mail to all Spain and specialises in Burgundy
wines. Now I am in love with Burgundy.

With wines from this shop I arranged two tastings and purchased a few
wines for my own consumption.

Marc Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 2004 PC Les Encegnieres was dominated by
oak and, while had good white fruit and nice acidity, I found it too
obvious.

Marc Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 2004 PC Les Caillerets was too austere, a
bit acidic from the start and took too much time to display some
character. Too much oak also.

Marc Colin Meursault 2002 PC Les Charmes was also completely closed, it
was wide in the mouth and very young. Not bad but not cheap also.

Marc Colin Saint-Aubin 2004 PC En Remilly was clearly overoaked and
disjointed. At 24 euros I am not buying more bottles.


As a result, in any of the tastings these wines were the best of the
league, and I clearly preferred a Chateau de la Maltroye 2004 CM PC to
the two PC by Marc Colin and even the Saint-Aubin, even if the price was
just 25 euros.

And for the price of the Meursault, I strongly prefer the Ramonet 2004 PC
Boudriotte which I thought was truly fantastic.

Disappointed to hear about the CRB. I usually like it for fall drinking.

Christoffel? Well, well - sad to say that it appears that the takeover by
Eymael of Mönchhof didn't really mean an improvement. The last good vintage
was 2001 and thereafter there has been a decline. 2005 reports only a couple
of good wines, the best being an 83 point Auslese... Your mileage may be
different though.
I'd rather look for St.-Urbans-Hof or Schloss Lieser or, in Uerzig today,
Dr. Hermann.
