Default Vegan Status Day 9

I've had IBS for almost twenty years and during a recent six week period was
having attacks after most meals. I was putting my health at risk by draining
my entire GI system on a daily basis. I know the loss of potassium and other
nutrients can trigger things such as a heart attack. I was having muscle
cramps almost daily.

For a while I had known of some foods that never caused me problems such as
rice. So I decided to go full vegan and the IBS stopped by the next day.
Today is my ninth day and my GI system is performing perfectly.

Some of my friends have nearly choked to death laughing at the thought of me
being a vegan and tell me I won't stick to it. But for the first time in
years I am free to have a meal and not worry about being near porcelain for
a few hours as I have been doing for years.

I do a lot of photography and follow a local animal rights group. I always
noticed how healthy the majority of them looked when I covered their events.
I understand that most of them are vegans.

Hopefully the weight loss will soon start. I could drop a hundred pounds at
this point.

Prior to us seeing going together my SO was suggested to try
a vegetarian diet by her gastronomic specialist.

In fact, as a child I had chronic colitis which went away when
I became a vegetarian.

Get ready for nasty personal attacks.

Hi Dean;

Congratulations on the move toward veganism and an even bigger
contratulations on the sudden improvement in your health. When that
happens that feels like magic and it is good to hear.

I have been a vegan for over 10 years and vegetarian for 26. In my
experience most of the reasons people quit fall into three groups:

1. Not feeling their best because they didn't learn about or good
nutrtion into practice.

2. They did not learn to make interesting and convenient food for
themselves.

3. Peer pressure.

Regarding number one, I recommend these links:

http://www.geocities.com/beforewisdo...ealthyVeg.html

http://www.veganhealth.org

Regarding number 2 you might try:

rec.food.veg.cooking
http://www.veganchef.com/
or type "vegan recipies" into google an be prepared for a deluge

Regarding number 3 I think you have that covered with your local AR
group. A local vegetarian club, potluck club, or other friends can help
too.

Know that you have made the best choice for yourself, your health, the
animals, and the environment.

Nice site and nice pictures!

It is also nice to hear the reverse of the stereotype. It might be
outdated. I visited an AR confrence for the first time a month back.
Like you, I was impressed with all of the healthy and slim people.

Be warned that veganism is not a magic bullet as far as weight loss goes.

Vegan calories are still calories. To lose weight you need to take in
fewer calories then you burn.

Some foods make people feel full on fewer calories than other foods.
These are the foods that help people lose weight with. Such foods include:

- Whole grains
- freshly made legumes
- vegetables
- fruits

Be warned, there are vegan foods that are concentrated sources and don't
give you a "full" feeling until after you have consumed many calories.
These foods should be minimized as they will promote weight gain or
rention:

- Flour products( whole grain or otherwise ), pasta, breads, bagels
- processed foods.
- oils
- drinks aside from water ( you can drink hundreds of calories and still
feel hungry )
- vegan sweets, treats, cakes, cookies, ice creams
- various fake meats
- anything more then enough nuts to cover the palm of your hand
- dried fruits.

Eat plenty out of the 1st group, start taking a walk everyday as often
as you can and in a few months you will notice some weight loss.

Good Luck

Thanks for sharing the inspiring post

Don't listen to them Dean.

I have met some nasty vegans in my time ( I am vegan ).

As with many groups vocal obnoxious minorities can give a group an
undeserved bad image.

One of the sterotypes of AR activists is that they are unhealthy. Your
personal experience expressed in your last post contradicts that.

My personal experience getting involved with AR groups in the last year
changed my stereotypes about AR activists being difficult people. I
have met a huge number of calm, caring, and thoughtful vegans/AR people.

Though I do not like some of the things PETA does, I have also met many
wonderful people who work for PETA who are doing wonderful things for
and through PETA.

As with many things, the media only reports on the small sensational bits.

PETA is a big group doing many different things. Don't go let other
people sell you their recycled stereotypes. Meet some of these people
for yourself and make your own decisions.

Hey, at age 50 I was running 15K 7K races and weight training.
I raised to perfectly healthy sons through college.

Please join the vegan netscape groups. The trolls dominate

I use a good old fashioned usenet server and client to read this group.
I have a filter to eliminate cross posts and a few other filters.

I never see their posts.

If you want to lose weight using a vegan diet you might like this book

Medicine:

Veganism isn't about diet. Veganism is about animal rights.

You're the fat **** in back holding the camera? You might give Dreck a
run for his money (not that either of you could run more than 20 yards)
for World's Fattest Vegan.

Veganism is organized misanthropy, so it's no wonder your experience
with vegans has been so negative.

You're not anymore. You have osteoporosis and B12 deficiency -- you're a
poster child (or a poster geezer) for the long term effects of veganism.

There is no such thing as a "dietary vegan." A "total
vegetarian" may eat a diet free of animals products for health
reasons, such as avoiding cholesterol, and not out of compassion
for animals. However, popular vegan author Joanne Stepaniak
writes that the term "dietary vegan" is inappropriate because
veganism is by definition about helping animals, and a term such
as "total vegetarian" should be used for people who avoid eating
animal products for health reasons but, for example, buy leather
shoes.
http://www.websters-online-dictionar...finition/vegan

You can make up a subjective definition, but it won't change the
objective definition of vegan. Veganism is about animal rights. It has
NOTHING whatsoever to do with food.
