Default Veganism & Atheism

I'm wondering why it seems so many vegans are atheists, wiccans or
pagans...and liberal.
I am a religious, conservative Catholic Christian and a vegan. There
doesn't seem to be too many like myself. I gave up meat for Lent about five
years ago and after 40 days, it just kind of grossed me out. Over the next
few months I gave up fish and finally dairy as well. I also don't by
leather etc.

Are there many other religious and/or conservative vegans out there?

When I attended a Republican picnic the only thing they had to eat was BBQ
meat sandwiches. And when I joined the vegetarian club, they sent me
liberal emails which I did not like. Also, why don't those who want to
protect animals, also want to protect babies (ie abortion).

I feel very balanced and happy to be vegan... I couldn't imagine ever going
back. (I love Silk Enhanced Soymilk & Earth Balance!)

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks,
David

Many of the pagans I know are religious, just to offer a note on
your phrasing.

(I myself am an atheist and a liberal, and I agree that veg*nism
seems to be more overt in that population, but it may just be that
conservative Christians don't make as big a deal of it or something.
Oh, and when I was a Seventh-day Adventist (and a Republican --
oy!), most of my churchmates were vegetarian -- my best friend was a
third-generation vegan Adventist.

I'm not going there in this newsgroup. Suffice to say that people
are different, and have different views.

There's room for everyone is my thought.

Because veganism isn't about food, it's about politics -- radical politics.

No, you aren't. That's oxymoronic.

That doesn't make you vegan. Veganism isn't about food or clothing or
lifestyles, it's about animal rights -- radical leftwing politics.

Nope. No such thing.

Because they don't really love animals, they just hate humans. Vegans
are misanthropes.

Veganism is a mental imbalance.

Got tits? All that soy has lots of estrogen.

Yes. First, ditch the vegan label because it's unsuitable for your
belief system. Second, eat a healthful, balanced diet. Third, don't
pontificate or make moral judgments about food.

No, they aren't. They like to think they are but most of them are blowhards.

Veganism specifically is radical/leftist and contrary to a Christian
worldview.

It might have something to do with the fact that the Bible
says we can eat meat.

· From the life and death of a thousand pound grass raised
steer and whatever he happens to kill during his life, people
get over 500 pounds of human consumable meat...that's well
over 500 servings of meat. From a grass raised dairy cow people
get thousands of dairy servings. Due to the influence of farm
machinery, and *icides, and in the case of rice the flooding and
draining of fields, one serving of soy or rice based product is
likely to involve more animal deaths than hundreds of servings
derived from grass raised animals. Grass raised animal products
contribute to fewer wildlife deaths, better wildlife habitat, and
better lives for livestock than soy or rice products. ·

Here we see plowing:
http://tinyurl.com/8fmxe

and here harrowing:
http://tinyurl.com/zqr2v

both of which kill animals by crushing, mutilation, suffocation,
and exposing them to predators. We can see that planting
kills in similar ways:
http://tinyurl.com/k6sku

and death from herbicides and pesticides needs to be
kept in mind:
http://tinyurl.com/ew2j5

Harvesting kills of course by crushing and mutilation, and
it also removes the surviving animals' food, and it exposes
them to predators:
http://tinyurl.com/otp5l

In the case of rice there's additional killing as well caused
by flooding:
http://tinyurl.com/qhqx3

and later by draining and destroying the environment which
developed as the result of the flooding:
http://tinyurl.com/rc9m3

Cattle eating grass rarely if ever cause anywhere near
as much suffering and death. ·
