Sushi (alt.food.sushi) For talking sushi. (Sashimi, wasabi, miso soup, and other elements of the sushi experience are valid topics.) Sushi is a broad topic; discussions range from preparation to methods of eating to favorite kinds to good restaurants.

CELL SWAP COULD HELP CONSERVATION
from BBC News Online

Japanese scientists have developed a new kind of assisted reproduction for
animals, in which one species can create another.

They implanted tissue from trout embryos into salmon embryos; and when the
salmon became adults and mated, they produced trout.

The researchers suggest this could be a way to improve the chances of
endangered species, they say in Nature.

It could also help secure supplies of bluefin tuna for sushi restaurants.

Ages ago when I first saw the movie "Bladerunner" I always wondered if the
sushi that
Harrison Ford orders and eats in the early part of the movie was real fish
or synthetic
like every other animal that appears in the movie afterwards.

Did he eat sushi? I thought he was eating noodles. It would definately be
synth! Remember what Zhora said about her snake. But when you're stuck on Earth,
you don't have that many choices (little people).

Ford asks for 2 pieces at the counter.
The Itamae says "Hitotsu de ii desu yo" (One is enough)
Ford says..No No I want 2
Itamae (reluctantly)..."wakatte kudasai yo" (please try to understand...)

Yes it was definitely sushi
And yes you are right, it must have been synthetic fish

That's right. I remember him say 2. I don't recall if they
showed what he ate though. I usually pay attention when sushi
is involved.

If the chef could afford real fish, you think he'd still be
on Earth?

That film was in 1982. Just about when Americans started discovering sushi.
Or maybe more accurately, Hollywood started showing movie stars eating
sushi.
That scene stuck in my head not only because of the sushi but because they
used
real Japanese spoken correctly, something not so common until then.

I thought it was pretty silly and I remember most of the audience cracking
up.
Nyotai Mori clearly belongs in the category of silly things a bunch of drunk
men
can do.
As sushi conisseurs we all know that cool to no more than room temperature
is
is best for sushi. In fact, historically women did not become itamaes
because of
the belief that womens' hands were hotter than mens, and therefore it would
not be
good for the neta. So I can only assume that everyone eats quickly with a
Nyotai mori.

It must take a long time to prepare it too.

Dan and Musashi - "Blade Runner" was spectacular, absolutely one of a
kind! Almost as great as *2001*. I didn't catch, or have forgotten,
the sushi order. I would have said he ordered noodles too.

I remember him saying two pieces, but never connected that it was sushi.
He was eating the noodles when Gaff comes up to him. Maybe if I understood
Japanese it would have sunk in.. cuz I know I've watched the movie enough
times.

The book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and the movie are only
loosely related. This is one of the few cases where myself I liked the
movie (especially the directors cut) way better then the book.

Awesome film! So far i've only seen it on VCR. I'd really like to see
it on a big screen, or DVD - well, the latter shouldn't be that hard
to do!

I've seen the Director's cut and the original.. and I think I prefer the
original with the voice overs.
