Sushi (alt.food.sushi) For talking sushi. (Sashimi, wasabi, miso soup, and other elements of the sushi experience are valid topics.) Sushi is a broad topic; discussions range from preparation to methods of eating to favorite kinds to good restaurants.

Default I smell when i eat sushi

After not eating raw fish for over 2 years I decided to get some tray
of sushi at a Japanese supermarket. I tucked into a sample of salmon,
tuna and some other fish which was quite enjoyable. The dinner was
sufficient not excessive and the fish was fresh and quality was quite
good.

After a couple of hours i noticed a distinct and unpleasant smell
wreaking out of my body, I wasn't exercising or sweating excessively
but there was definitely a smell which was out of the ordinary. I am
pretty sure the body odor came from the raw fish. Does anyone else
exhibit this? Is there anything i can combat this smell?

Never heard of such a thing anywhere, in Japan or or in other countries.
Often, claims of such "smells" or even "perceived smells" are connected to
a diet
which is repeated consistently over time, usually many years. Not an
occasional
meal. In your case I would guess that it may be related to your own body's
reaction to
certain things, such as certain proteins, fish oils, etc.
Also, has another person been able to verify this smell? Often it's very
difficult
for one to verify any odors or smells which emanate from their own bodies.

Have you tried freezing the capsules? For me, storing them in the
freezer completely avoids the problem (no fishy burps, either).

I tried taking fish-oil (1000mg) capsules but there was a often a
distinct aftertaste of old fish that I don't tolerate well. It was
especially noticeable if I burped. Currently, I am taking 1200mg
capsules (the monsters look like veterinary medicine and cost about 50
cents each!) with a so-called "enteric coating". There have been no off
tastes with those so far.

I know we're way off track here, but I should point out that with my
regimin I also took bromelain, a pineapple enzyme, that helped break
down the Omega-3, and kept a number of symptioms, intestinal for one,
from being overly dramatic. 10-12 grams of Omega-3 can be pretty
torturous if not handled appropriately.

I don't know if I'd want to take bromelain (spelling ?) with gelatin
capsules. I suspect it would break the gelatin down very quickly just
like you can't make satisfactory jello with raw pineapple. Also the idea
of taking a frozen 1000mg capsule frightens me!

I got the recipe of using Bromelain with all that omega three from a
doctor. I feel quite certain my digestion wouldn't have been able to
handle it otherwise. A few years later I had another carpal-tuinnel
spate and tried it without the bromelain. It was most discomforting.
