Default pickled watermelon rind

My mother remembers from years back (1940s or thereabouts) her mother
making pickled watermelon, but she doesn't know the recipe.

I have yet to find a comparable recipe online; the twist: they weren't
sweet, but were closer to pickled cukes. Every recipe I've come across
has significant quantities of added sugar; I've never had what she is
referring to, but I don't know if it would have *any*, based upon the
description.

Anyones know of a recipe like that?
