No, they are not olives, they are too small, they are brown, not black or olive
green and they don't have the crunchy texture that an olive has...
The best answer I've read is that they are raisins...
A raisin might re-hydrate from being steamed and resemble the mysterious brown
things in the commercially-prepared tamales...
