Default Nocino and Ethanol - Help

The only ethanol I can get from a pharmacy is so called 'anhydrous"
ethanol. I don't know how harmful the anhydrous ethanol is, can it be
used for making nocino and safe drinking ? Is it fit for human
consumptiion ?

Thank you.

You can get ethanol from a pharmacy? Are you sure it's not actually
isopropanol?

is so called 'anhydrous" ethanol.

The word "anhydrous" means "does not contain water", which would
imply it's pure, 200-proof ethanol... provided it's not denatured.
More on this below.

Most ethanol sold for purposes other than drinking is not pure,
it's "denatured", which means a deadly poison (such as methanol)
is added to keep people from drinking it. Check the label for the
word "denatured", or a skull and crossbones, or the words "for external
use only" or "harmful or fatal if swallowed". One or more of those is
probably there.

Why? Tax. The govt. doesn't want anyone drinking booze that
hasn't been properly taxed. This is true in most countries.
So most countries have laws requiring any ethanol not booze-taxed
to be "denatured" with poisons which render it undrinkable. So
watch out what you drink.

All:

200-proof (100% ABV) Ethanol is not available in the wild. To reduce
the water content of Ethanol, Benzene may be added. Google for
'Triple Point'. To further reduce the water content, Calcium chips
may also be added. You might get to 99% but you really don't want to
drink any of that stuff.

The water content may be low, but the other sh*t ...................

95% lab Ethanol tastes like sh*t and so does Surgical Spirit.
Methylated Spirit looks a bit like Parfait D'Amour, smells interesting
but the Pyridine sort of spoils the taste. Trust me on that.

If it is really "anhydrous" or "absolut" ethanol, it may be fit for
drinking, if you water it down. But normally its too expensive for
drinking, as it is specially purified to remove the last ~4% of water you
cant distill off. If its not that expensive it may be denatured. In
austria e.g. the absolut ethanol is taxed like spirits of wine which is
drinkable.
