Posting to a news group for gmail invites is one hell of a way to get
a lot of valid email adddresses. What would one do with all of those
valid email addresses? Hmm... Why would someone want to collect lots
and lots of valid email addresses...

You don't need an invitation to open up a free gmail account. That
policy was online during gmail's beta test period. Anyone who wants a
gmail account now can get one simply by going to

and following the directions to open an account.

You need to receive and enter a special invitation code in order to
create an account. Currently, we are only sending these codes as text
messages to mobile phones....."

I had neither an invitation nor used a mobile in signing up. Stale
information in your pantry. Time to houseclean.

Try this route and see if you can work around it.

Go to: http://www.google.com/

click on sign in

click on create an account now, fill out the boxes.

At that point, it should create your account. I did not go any further
because I do not want to create a new identity there. To this point,
they are not asking for a lot of information.

Hopefully that will get you around the sms registration and not bog
you down elsewise.

Sreve, you also may want to see if you can work it via downloading
google talk and using it to set up the gmail account. I'm thinking
that was the way I did it because I went with google talk first.

I think you must have gotten lucky, jim. I believe they made it "open"
registration for the first XXXXXX number of people, and now its by some
sort of invite only. If I try to register now, it tells me I need an
invitation.

Are you saying that AFTER if created your account, it started asking
all these questiopns that have you sooooo upset? Because where I left
off, your account would be established. AND that is very different
from asking a bunch of questions to establish an account. It only asks
about three to that point.

Nah, he's pounting because it asked for his phone number. I never gave
mine and I did not get an invitation. Maybe they consider him a major
risk and want to call his mommy first to make sure he uses her

Pouting? Me? Hardly. I got my gmail aco**** with nary an invitation
nor using a phone number. You haven't and have whined about it. BTW,
what did happen to you after it created your account? No phone number
required to that point and your account was created - yet you said
that could not happen without revealing a bunch of info you would
rather not???? An email address and a password? THAT'S what you whined
about.

Your gardner has more information on you than that. Ask him what he
knows about you when he picks the fruit off your tree.
