Volume 1 was my first cookbook, a gift from my folks I believe. I still
have it, some 35 years later. The spine is broken, and the spotted and
stained pages mark my favorite recipes.

Perhaps the best self-taught cooking "school" is to go through this book
and cook at least 1/3 of the recipes. You will learn an oincredible
amount, and have a lot of great eating as well.

I wish I could remember if I have either. Wonder what the most tried and
true/used recipes from these two book are. It would be interesting to know
if this has been polled. Don't they poll everything?

Hmm...I might just do this, after I finally get my books out of
storage.

I have heard so many stories from food professionals, that say that
they started towards their professional cooking careers by working
their way through these books in just this manner.

Must be something to it.. ;)

Maybe I will start an rfc tagalong project, in case anyone wants to
join me in doing this. I might do it anyway, just myself, but it
might be fun to have a bunch of us attempting to educate ourselves by
cooking our way through these books. Would be interesting to post our
results, trials, etc on this group.

Am I dreaming this -- didn't Ina Garten say on Chefology that she did every
recipe in these two volumes?

Here's the cover jacket and the book I have. Perhaps someone could place
it in it's release order? Volume or compilation?

I am not totally sure what you are asking...

That is the first volume of the two volumes..is that the answer you
want? I think the 2nd volume says Volume II, but I could be wrong. I
don't have my books with me.

Christine,

I don't see a volume number. Where is it listed? It's not on the spine so
I'm just guessing.

Please advise!

The first volume didn't have a volume number, if I recall correctly. I
am assuming that is because the authors didn't know that they were
going to have a 2nd volume when they published the first one. The 2nd
volume came several years later, and wasn't originally planned. The
only one that has a volume number, is volume II, as far as I know.

If someone else has the the volumes in front of them, maybe they help
clarify this.

I borrowed it from the library - it's a bit short on the cooking - more a
breathless description of her life - more "Chick-lit" than "Chicken-pot pie"
.. It's little wonder that JC wasn't very pleased with the project.

I think that the later printings of volume 1 (after the release of
volume 2) actually say "volume 1."

On the title page of the one I have it says 1961. The page with all
the printing & copyright information gives the copyright date as 1961
and "Published October 16, 1961." It does not have a dust jacket and
the cover does not look pristine but the inside looks like it was
never opened. I paid $3.00 for it.

Of course I was talking about the book "Julie and Julia". I would NEVER
criticise Julia:-) I heard her interviewed on CBC and she was asked what
she would like her last meal to be and she replied: 1/2dozen oysters
followed by Foie Gras. But she also praised good hamburgers. She was a
great lady!
