Default Lunch today

(Breakfast was over-easy eggs and toast -- my kitchen was a mess and I
wanted something simple while I get it back into shape.)

I'm roasting an eggplant and some beets right now. When they're done,
I plan to make some baba ganouj and a roasted-beet salad to go with
some falafel balls (I don't have pita and we're not going shopping
today, so we'll either use corn tortillas or go without).

Pics if I think of it (and if they look good -- I had a yummy dinner
the other night that I didn't take a picture of because I knew it
would look yucky. ;-)

Chopped up the last of a wonderful Daube of Pork, warmed it in Sweet
Baby Ray's Honey BBQ Sauce and served it up on warmed French hoagie
rolls...serious guilty pleasure.

I did. Not the greatest picture, but it was sure yummy.

(Roasted the beets. Mixed the hot beets with half a sliced red onion
and a dressing made of oil/lemon juice/salt/pepper. Chilled for a
couple of hours. The falafel is made from a boxed mix. The baba
ganouj is my standard -- roasted eggplant, garlic, a little lemon
juice, a bunch of tahini, and a touch of salt.)

Looks delicious! I adore felafel. But do you eat yours dry? I'd
probably make some tzatziki to dip em in. (Sometimes I make
lemon-tahini sauce, but you've already got those flavors in your
babaghanoush.) Maybe add a few cubes of feta over the beets as well.
But it looks wonderful. I'd gladly eat a plate just as it is!

I love mediterranean food. Back in Albuquerque, we had a fantastic
greek/mediterranean place where I used to eat pretty cheap all the
time. Nothing like that sround here. I get dolmas at the grocery mad
make felafel frmo a bix, but it's just not the same. sigh. i hate
moving and leaving behind all my favorite restaurants! Friends you can
keep in touch with, but meals? Just memory.

Thanks a lot, serene. I did a week's worth of grocery shopping
yesterday, but now I'm gonna have to go back to the store and get
everything I need to make felafel and greek salads. Hanging out around
here gets expensive sometimes! =)

Which place is that? I am going back to Albuquerque this spring
(fingers crossed), and I went to a little market on Wyoming, I think
it was. Had a little cafe attached to it, and had some good products
in there. Can't remember the name of it right now.

My favorite affordable place was the Olympia Cafe on Central, across
from UNM. (between yale and harvard, i believe. south side of the
street) They had a great vegetarian platter, which had greek stuff like
spanakopita, dolmas, greek salad, greek potatoes, and pastichio on it,
and they had a mediterranian combo which was felafel, hummus, and
tabouleh. It's great - it's owned by a couple who moved here from
Greece and have made the place their life. They are both there, cooking
and serving and supervising, all day every day. Clsoed on Sundays for
religious reasons. Closed for 2 wrrks every summer so they can go home
to greece to visit.

If you have money to spend on Greek & Mediterranean food, try yanni's,
further up Central, next to the old Lobo Theatre. They used to make the
BEST vegetarian moussaka I've ever eaten!

I bet you're thinking of the Middle EasternMarket on Menaul. I didn't
like their felafel - too dry and crumbly - and their dolmas were pretty
dried-out, too. But I used to do some shopping i their maket, and as I
recall they had great halvah.

Of course, it's been 3 years since I've lived there, so these memories
are getting old, hope the places are as good as they used to be!

No, this was a different market. It was down at Constitution and
Wyoming, I think.

I dipped them in the baba ganouj, but usually I make tahini sauce or
tzatziki, yes. This week, we have *zero* money for groceries, so I'm
using just what we have on hand, which didn't include yogurt this
time, and I really wanted to use up the eggplant and beets before they
went bad.

Thanks. :-)

I make them. They're time-consuming, but much better (and *much*
cheaper) than the grocery ones.

Yep. I feel the same.

*giggle* You got me back by making me crave dolmas.

Hm. Don't know what's there. Wonder if it was there 3 years ago...?
