Depending on where you live, delivered pizza might be best
avoided. It had come to my attention at some point that there
are people in the midwest who think domioes is pizza, and good
pizza at that. Just sayin.

Can't speak for the martini, what are they, gin? I hate gin.

My list of nottobemissed would not be very sophisticated, it'll
be interesting to see what people come up with.

A meal at Flower Drum in Melbourne would suit me as a last repast!

Soooooooo? Are we gonna start listing favorites or not?! LOL

I won't list a 100 but two of my nottobemissed would be:

Artichokes w/Bearnaise Sauce

Hmmm... actually, type the above 100 times and it could be my top 100 ! LOL
Below is how I make the sauce to go with the artichokes. You can prepare
the artichokes a multitude of times but I usually boil mine with lemon
slices...

Bearnaise Sauce

2 TBSP Red Wine Vinegar
1 1/2 tsp chopped Green Onion
1 1/2 tsp Tarragon
1/8 tsp cracked Black Pepper
4 Egg yolks
3/4 cup Butter, softened
1 TBSP Parsley

1. In top of a double-boiler (d-b), combine first 4 ingredients. Over high
heat, heat to boiling. Boil until vinegar is reduced in half.

2. Place top of d-b unit over bottom unit with hot, not boiling, water. Add
yolks, and cook, beating constantly with whisk until slightly thickened.

3. Add butter, about 2 TBSP at a time, beating constantly with whisk, until
butter is melted and mixture is thickened. Stir in parsley.

Hmmm... actually, type the above 100 times and it could be my top 100 ! LOL

Homemade Yeast rolls

Homemade Yeast rolls

7 1/2 oz warm water
3 1/2 - 4 cups all purpose flour
3 1/2 TBSP sugar
3/4 tsp salt
3 TBSP butter
2 TBSP powdered coffee creamer
2 tsp instant dry yeast

Mix and let rise - punch down and place in the fridge overnight. Shape as
desired, let rise, brush with butter before and immediately after baking.
Oh my stars!!!!!

Yikes. That's okay, I see their cars once in a while even around
here. Only a couple good places around here, too. Surprised
me when I moved down here. Still you can easily beat the chain
pizzas without breaking a sweat, come on.

Yep - that really should be on the list! So far, I haven't found a
preparation of them yet that I didn't like! Steamed w/butter, deviled, as a
salad, cakes.... yummmm!!

I don't know about you, but when I'm old enough that I don't have much
to worry about, I think I'll try some "risky" foods that I've stayed
away from when I was younger. Fugu (pufferfish) was the first to come to
mind.

In no particular order:

1. A serrano ham sandwich on a warm Spanish afternoon.

2. Fresh fiddleheads

3. Ragoűt de boulettes (a French-Canadian version of fricadelles)

4. Poutine along Highway 20 at a rest stop near Joly, Québec

5. A short espresso with a Crodo chinotto chaser

6. A good Alsatian choucroute

7. Méchoui

8. Red chicken curry at the Royal Thai in Ottawa

9. A plain butter tart (no raisins or nuts)

10. Bread pudding the way my mother made it (recipe posted
previously) with clear maple syrup

11. Strong coffee

12. A peanut butter sandwich with banana slices

13. A tall glass of milk from Québec

It's all I have time for now. I'll try to add more later.

Ok--here are my meals/foods:

1) Soft shelled crab sandwiches (crabs just floured and pan fried in
olive oil)
2) Big Mac and fries (the ultimate in pure trash food)
3) Fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans cooked with
bacon
4) Chicken Cordon Bleu
5) Chess pie (homemade crust only)
6) Key-lime pie (homemade crust, and none of that bright green crap
for the filling)
7) My mother's apple pie (she makes the best crust I've ever tasted)
8) Open face hot turkey sandwich with fries and turkey gravy over all
9) An honest to god deep dish pizza that you have to eat with a knife
and fork (go to Chicago for this)
10) Lobster
11) Shrimp cocktail
12) Chocolate eclairs!!
13) Fish and chips
14) Pot roast dinner (carrots, potatoes, peas, chuck roast, onion with
the roast broth over all)

Oh, Rosie, years ago I stayed a few days in Riva del Garda; one of my
favorite holidays. I wish I'd known about this. We met a couple who were
'doing the Lakes' that year. I've thought about a holiday there for years,
but will never get there again I'm sure. Just glad I got there once. Thanks
for a trip down memory lane.

Do you mean foods you have never eaten but want to try before you die?
If so, I can't think of any. If not, I would want my final meal to be
lobster with drawn butter. Oh and you aren't missing anything with the
martini. An inlaw made one for me years ago, likely because they knew
DH was in another room and they could get a reaction. I was attracted
to the fancy glass and the olive. Well I have to tell you it smelled
and tasted like hair tonic AND coming out the nose burned like heck! DH
arrived just in time to see the results. I still don't know if his
tears were from laughing or crying. Those darn in laws are always
pulling stunts like that!

Be very careful when criticizing the martini around here... trust me
on that one.

Many (myself included) find it's flavor to be unique, exquisite,
complex yet simple- not a taste for everyone but those who enjoy them,
enjoy them immensely. Kev

I don't have anything to contribute, just thought after my last
response to Barb's meat-a-ball post I'd best pop in here quick to take
a look-see... I think a big pitcherful of 2nis is the perfect ending.

Uh oh, now I'm in deep doodoo. There she is rummaging through her
knife drawer... yikes... Barb, what are you planning to do to me with
your big cleavage?

Hurry with that pitcherful, and don't worry about the olives, don't
think I have time to chew. <g>

I've never had a martini because I don't like gin. I had a gin and tonic
once with a splash of lime and it tasted like exactly what gin is - juniper
berries turned into liquor. You may have my martini

I've had my share of good, bad and indifferent delivery pizzas. I've also
made pizzas from scratch and also had frozen pizzas. I guess pizza just
doesn't float my boat. I'll eat it but it's never my first choice for a
meal.

I can't honestly say there is anything I'd like to try before I die. I've
had great steaks, mediocre steaks & bad steaks. I've had great fish and
fish I didn't like. I've had crab and crab legs; lobster, lobster tails.
All sorts of vegetables. All sorts of soups. All of the above with all
sorts of sauces and/or cheeses and/or breads.

My own personal *hell* [in the afterlife, not before I die] would be to eat
nothing but iceburg lettuce topped with disgusting Thousand Island dressing
from here to eternity

Hoppin' John (blackeyed peas simmered until thick and velvety with crisped
bacon bits, onion, diced green and red peppers, a touch of heat, and a
sprinkle of shredded sharp cheddar on top, served over fluffy white rice)
and fresh collard greens--cooked to the point that they are still plump, not
cooked all to hell so that there is no life left in them--simmered with lean
ham bits, with buttered corn bread and a big glass of tea. (That would be
iced tea, as hot tea down here is "Hot tea" and iced tea is "tea."

If you have room you may have a square of fresh banana or lemon cake, made
with real fruit and juices, not extracts. Or maybe some homemade banana
pudding.

Call me boring, but one of the most delicious foods on the planet is
freshly made tofu, while it's still hot...with a sprinkling of soy
sauce. It is heavenly.

If I knew that I'd have a last meal though, I'd probably want to eat
all of the foods that I have avoided most of my adult years, knowing
that they're bad for me. My worst meal of eating would probably be
laughed at though :-)

Strawberry and rhubarb jam... heaven on toast. I make it in May and we eat
it through the year. Rhubarb scared me for the longest time. I was told
the leaves were poisonous. Strawberry jam always seemed to sweet and the
strawberries seemed too stewed. Someone suggested adding the rhubarb. So,
I bought some followed the Surejel recipe. The rhubarb smelled and looked
so bad and I was wondering why was I trying this. It turned out wonderful.
One wouldn't know there was rhubarb in it. Yet, the tartness of the rhubarb
really enhances the color and the flavor of the strawberries. A definite
must try for jam and toast lovers.

A type of edible fern, the national fruit of New Brunswick as I used

It's a small tart with a sweet syrupy filling. Canadian.

As to a recipe, many variations. Pick one you like.

Hoppin John is one of my favorites! To make it extra good, try
chopping tomatos, red (or vadalia) onion and cucumber--mix with a
little balsamic vinegar and olive oil--put this mixture on the hoppin
john. Gives the dish a whole new dimension in taste. (This topping is
also great on collard greens)--r3

Wow, some of the food on here isn't really food. First I would like to
say that pizza from dominos or any other place isn't good, nor is
anything from McDonalds. Martinis are amazing, especially with olives.
Olives stuffed with feta is also very good. A great medium rare steak
with a nice glass of red wine is also very good.

When it comes down to it though, the best main course would have to be
butter chicken (from an Indian restaurant made in a clay oven) with nan
bread (plat bread, like a pita, but much better than anything you can
get in a store). After that I could die a little happier. I think
people in North America have the worst tastes in food and really the
cultures in Asia have by the far the most advanced tastes in food.

There are some foods that wreak havoc on my digestive system. They include
citrus fruits and nuts. I think that if I were going to be executed and had a
last meal I would pig out on oranges, grapefruits, Turtles and pecan pie, but
only if I was sure they were going to kill me before the side effects hit.

Here are some I've been deeply thankful for:

Hog Island oysters in NoCal

Fried oyster po' boy in a good south Louisiana joint with an Abita
beer on the side.

Salade nicoise in Provence on a warm day

Good Vietnamese food (pho, beef salad, and so on)

A meal comprised only of appetizers. (lobster salad in a martini
glass, perfectly fried calamari, shrimp remoulade in a Creole tomato
"bowl", etc.)

Really good barbecue in a non-famous roadside joint. Preferably one
that used to be a gas station.

Bulgogi

Fois gras in southwest France

Well prepared lamb chops (I had some really good ones at Lonesome Dove
in Fort Worth, but I've made pretty good ones myself.

Really good sushi. Simple and fresh.

A salad of lentiles vertes du Puy, garlic, minced onion, celery, lemon
confit and olive oil.

Truffled mac and cheese

There are more, but these come to mind this afternoon.

This isn't directed at you, Michael, but did I miss something here? This
thread seems to have immediately morphed into "my favorite things", *not*
the "best meals to eat before you die". That would seem to imply things
you may not have eaten before, but should try. Or doesn't anyone read?

The idea is to compile a list, you scratch off what you've already
had. How could a list of places to see before you die be compiled
if there wasn't anyone who'd ever been there ... how would you
know it's worthwhile?

Same thing with food to try before you die. Like, if you've never
had this, have it at least once before you croak.

I didn't mean things that *no one* had ever see or tried, only a list of
things you'd like to try before you die.

Yes, precisely.

So how can anyone answer (or write that book) if they hadn't tried
it?

Here's what he said:

I have noticed in the library books which will list the "100" places you
should visit before you die, or the "100" things you should do before you
die. I was wondering what would be included in the "100" meals or food I
should eat before I die. I have never had a pizza delivered to my house, and
I have never drank a martini.

He wants to know what should be on his list. Not your list.
His list.

Thanks, Nancy, for clarifying. I obviously read it incorrectly...more than
once. :-)
