I meant in the cartoon, but in life I'm of the 'close enough' camp, so you can hate me if you want. Daggers in the back of my head. Hey, I'd like to be behind me on line with the extra item or 2 than the person with only 3 items who appears shocked! yes, shocked! that they are expected to pay for the stuff and only then start hunting for their wallet. nancy |

Oh, and Andy, did you see, Acme parent company was sold,
some company bought out Albertsons. I don't have a good feeling about this. Anyone out there have experience with stores named Supervalu, something like that? nancy |

For this reason I'm worried new ownership will make a difference, negatively, because I see how it can change. nancy |

Here we go. Express lanes should be cash only, in my opinion. nancy |

I admit, I had chronic problems with those lanes when they first arrived. Now they are a blessing except when you have someone in front of you, who _always_ has 2-3 problems. maxine in ri |

I don't think I would mind so much if they at least had the check book out and appropriate check cashing card. There is nothing that ticks me off at the checkout counter quite as much as the women who stand there and watch their groceries being checked out and then wait until the cashier tells her the damage before she even starts to look for means to pay it. They rumble through their purse for the wallet and then through the wallet for the interact card or cash. If cash, then they have to sort through the bills. Given two checkout lines to wait in, one fill of women and one full of men, I will line up with the men, because there is a better chance that they will have their money out and ready to pay before the total is added up. Maybe not always, but more often. I just don't understand how someone can be so clueless as to stand there and watch the grocery bill add up without thinking about getting out the money to pay for it until the last minute. |

I don't think this has ever happened to me - I've certainly not been held up by more than a minute. Compared to the time it took to put the heaping great trolley full of shopping through the checkout, it's minimal. Hopefully no one behind me has ever thought I was taking forever to pay. I do try to get the money or card out as quickly as possible in between loading items out of the trolley on to the belt, and taking the bags off the little loading area (so there's room for more) and putting them into the trolley (hopefully so that bags of heavy items aren't squashing bags of soft ones). The only time I would be just standing there watching them being checked out would be if my husband was with me and he was loading the trolley; or if it was a minimal number of items in one bag (at a normal register where I could load 10 items on to the belt. At our express lane you're handing items out of the handbasket to the cashier only a couple at a time, really - no room for 10 items to sit). Then, I could have the card or money out waiting. If paying by cash then it's going to take me a few seconds to put change away in my wallet and put my wallet in my bag. I've stopped worrying that this might take up 40 seconds of the person behind me's time. I don't take hours about it, but I want my money away securely before I walk out of the shop with a trolley or hands full of shopping bags. -- Rhonda Anderson Cranebrook, NSW, Australia |

However, by the time the cashier has given me the total, I've already filled out most of the register, swiped my card, and have the pen ready to sign the receipt. ![]() What can I say, I rarely carry cash! I have enough trouble with the stuff that has a bar code. They have to keep someone standing there to help, lots of times there are problems and usually there is at least one setup not working. Different ones every time, not just the same one. This tells me it's not all the customer's fault for not being used to the machines. nancy |
