OT ice rant
GODDAMMIT
Clear the ice from your sidewalks people! Shovel, scrape, icemelt, whatever, I don't care! Just get the ice off your sidewalk. 2 times on one block I slipped and fell on my knees while walking the dogs tonight. Twice! There was just enough powdery snow to cover the ground so I couldn't see the sidewalk. I now have 2 scraped up, throbbing knees and I'm ****ed off. I swear, if they don't have that ice cleared tomorrow I'm gonna go up to one house and cram a shovel up their ass and go to the other and shove a bag of icemelt up there. -- ..:Heather:. www.velvet-c.com Step off, beyotches, I'm the roflpimp! |

Did anyone ever stop to consider the possibility that an elderly person/couple may live in some of these homes of which you complain? So you say: "hire someone to clean it up!!" Perhaps due to rediculously high heating cost, those who physically can't shovel their walks also can't afford to pay someone to do it. How about taking a walk through your neighborhood and find out WHY people aren't shovelling their walks instead of calling the law on them. GODDAMMIT!! Kev |

Actually, the city does it, with small sidewalk removal vehicles and later with large ploughs. Here is the city schedule and we don't get as much snow as Québec (city) does. http://ottawa.ca/city_services/traff...dards_en.shtml Residential sidewalks are ploughed after 16 hours following a 5 cm (2 in.) accumulation. Some years ago, this schedule was non-existent and consequently snow accumulation was a danger to all. One year, I fell four times trying to get to the bus. Now, it's only if there's freezing ice that the sidewalks are dangerous and they will spread sand if it doesn't melt because of the weather. > your neighborhood looks lovely. Centretown in Ottawa. I don't really understand that because sidewalks are on city property, but they make the adjacent property owner liable. My brother lives on a short circle. There is really no need to even have sidewalks, but the city put one in along his side of the road and it goes only as far as his property. So when it snows or gets icy he and the other three homeowners with the walk are responsible for cleaning it. Meanwhile, living on a circle, their street is at the bottom of the list of priority for cleaning. It is possible for them to be charged for not clearing the sidewalk on a street that has not been plowed. That sucks. People are funny about clearing snow. I used to live in a fourplex apartment that shared a double driveway with the fourplex next door. I was the only one who every shovelled the driveway. Of course I only shovelled our half. No one did the other side. And then the girls upstairs would park in the part that I had cleared. I know live on an opened road allowance. It is about 100 feet from my parking area to the main road. My neighbour lives about 300 feet further back. I have a 12 horse snow blower. He has a tractor mounted snow blower. That SOB will never get out and clear the road allowance first. He has to go past my place to the road to turn around, and with a tractor like that we are talking an extra 5-10 seconds each way. I go out and clean out my parking area and the road allowance from there to the road, and like clockwork, as I am finishing he comes out with his tractor. |

Agreed. The offender is never told who complained so there is no personal animosity (you are so intelligent, as you tell us, I am surprised you did not know this). Private laneways are the homeowners responsibility. In urban areas the sidewalks even though public must be cleared by the resident. Failure to do so will result in fines and/or clearance by the municipality with the clearance costs tacked onto your taxes. Mail carriers can refuse to deliver mail to residences with uncleared pathways and utility companies can estimate bills rather than read the metre which can cause higher than normal bills at some point. |

But even if that's not the case, it's possible she is a responsible owner and picks up after her dog. Dogs also need exercise and stimulation. There are numerous excuses why individuals might not be able to take care of a snowy/icy sidewalk right away, once in a while. But if they ignore it on a routine basis, they should be fined and it's not a good sign if several homes on the same block ignore snow/ice removal. It's a responsibility one takes on when you own a home in a snowbelt. Sue(tm) Lead me not into temptation... I can find it myself! |

The usual approach to this situation was different from what's been discussed here. Neighbors would call neighbors and say, "I'm going out to clean my sidewalk, you want me to do yours?" Or, "I'm hiring a high school kid to get the ice off the sidewalk, you want to go in with me?" People who live in harsh climates have a greater need to cooperate with one another and reap greater benefits from cooperation. -aem |

I grew up in an area that got snow and ice in winter (PA), and I remember people scattering salt all over the streets and sidewalks to melt the ice. For whatever reason, she won't poop in the yard, we have to walk. And if she doesn't poop at her appointed time (she's way into schedules) she'll poop in the house when I'm at work. I guess, ultimately, I don't mind. I just wish people would clear their walks. -- ..:Heather:. www.velvet-c.com Step off, beyotches, I'm the roflpimp! |

GODDAMMIT!! BUT, these people live on the other side of the alley from me, I know who they are and they are not elderly nor are they disabled. They just didn't clear the ice from the walk, thus making walking extremely painful for me today. I do know my neighbors. -- ..:Heather:. www.velvet-c.com Step off, beyotches, I'm the roflpimp! |

Normally it's just a pain to walk on those sections, but with the shifting back and forth from cold to warm to cold it became an ice sheet that was then covered by snow. I did not see the ice, the previous lumpiness of the sections had disappeared and the rest of the sidewalks were clear but for the puff of new snow. -- ..:Heather:. www.velvet-c.com Step off, beyotches, I'm the roflpimp! |
