When I was a kid, we had a second stove in the basement. We'd moved
from an apartment where they didn't provide appliances (odd, I know) to
a house with built-in range and wall oven. It gave my Mom someplace to
bake things without heating the kitchen, and we boys sometimes cooked
some stuff on it (the ones who lived in the basement).

I like to multi-task. Not just on the computer. I have a
bread machine that is a small oven too. It came in handy
when I had the family over. I have the microwave. You know
I'm getting my new Jenn Air Tuesday and it has 2 ovens and 5
burners.

I'm a happy cooker!

I haven't mentioned it before but I actually have two kitchens, yup, I
do. I have a rental house on my property sitting about 200 feet from
my house, it's empty, no tenant, but I still keep the electric service
going and keep it heated in winter so the pipes don't freeze and so and
the structure doesn't deteriorate... unheated buildings don't remain
sound very long. It's really a nice three bedroom house, the eat-in
kitchen is decent but nothing fancy. The stove works fine, it's
electric, I've used in on thanksgiving. I've had tenant's just about
all my adult life... don't think I really want to deal with it anymore.

Very nice. I am jealous of that lot (although I probably would have a
difficult time taking care of the lawn myself) and having a spare

I bet you could do that lawn real easy, it's level and not much cutting
around things... and that gym set is no longer there.... takes me about
an hour once a week to do the front, back, and sides, about two acres
worth... of course you need the right mower.

That's only a small piece of it, just the portion around the rental
house. But I really don't kill myself maintaining it. With the right
equipment most of the labor is minimal, mostly just my time. All
together I mow about ten acres worth, once a week... and some portions
every two weeks... of course a lot depends on weather, can't mow very
well when it's been raining, the ground gets soft and the tractors sink
in. On average I can mow everything in an eight hour day, and that
includes all the close in push mower work and string trimming. With my
54" mower I do all the perimeters and around the trees, etc. And with
my 84" mower I can make quick work of mowing one acre after another.
And then there are all my shrubs and flower beds to work on, and my
vegetable garden. This year I decided to donate some of that fenced in
space for a bunch of blueberry bushes, I don't really need so muhc
space for veggies, I can't possibly use them all. At first I thought
18 but now I've decided on 24 blueberry bushes, eight each of three
different types. Each type matures at a different time so with having
them staggered I will have blueberries all summer, and hopefully enough
to freeze so I can have some in the winter too. Now I'm wondering how
long it will take to harvest those berries, and if I'll have to
outsmart the birds.

Haven't seen crawdads but there's aplenty "such", such as frogs and
salamanders, occasionally a snake. Sometimes the water runs right to
the top... a person could about go white watering. It took me a long
time and a lotta sweat to clear the high growth and then to do my
plantings. Now I'm waiting for spring in hopes of seeing what made it.

I also have a cute little pond settin' in my wildflower meadow, once a
year during late summer I hack it all down with the brush hog, keeps it

guessing down south? It reminds me of the northeast, but of course, it's

Rochester is a good drive from me but doable.
Niskayuna is not nearly as far from where I am.

I suspect you visit each other often as you're only about 3 hours

Rochester is a good drive from me but doable.

Mostly she comes here, since our mother lives near Rochester. But, of
course I have visited her several times in Niskayuna. Both of my kids went
to Albany for 4th grade class trips, and I went along as a parent chaperone
and really enjoyed the area,

I don't do vegetable gardens any more, but I have some flower gardens. I
have one lilac bush that I have been experiementally pruning over the last
few years to see what happens.

By the way, yesterday it was 59* here and today, one of those mini
snow-tornadoes blew by my window bird feeder, lol.

You are lucky to live within a reasonable distance of each other. My
brother lives in Florida so we can't really visit on spur of the
moment. It's too far to drive and I never liked to fly, and especially
not now with all the craziness. My brother travels a lot with his job
so whenever he's in the NY are and has time he will stay for a day or
two.

I don't know the Rochester area but I imagine that your being about a
half hour out of town it must be kind of rural, and especially nice if
you're near the lake. I used to have a friend who lived in Little
Falls, so I got to that area quite a bit, and I especially liked Utica
and the surrounding areas.

Maybe you need to start a vegetable garden again, perhaps something
small and manageable.

My vegetable garden is fairly large, actually too big for me as I can't
use all that it produces. This year I decided to donate 1/4 to
blueberry bushes, and I'll still have more space than I need for
vegetables.

I have a small stream that meanders by my rental house on its way to my
barn and then turns left (east) into the wildflower meadow. As you can
see it passes by my vegetable garden and so it's rare I ever have to

Your homestead looks beautiful Sheldon.

I am about 20 minutes away from a couple of the beautiful Finger Lakes and
about a 1/2 hour from Lake Ontario. I pass by a dairy farm every morning on
the way to work, so yea, it's pretty rural. I can hear 'em mooing from my
house in the summer. The Erie Canal passes through my town.

With a full-time job, 2 teenagers that contribute minimally (lol), and no
farm equipment, I couldn't keep up with a garden as wonderful as yours!
But, you are right, a small garden would be fun and yield plenty for the 3
of us. I hire a guy to cut my lawn and plow the driveway if that tells you
anything!

And yes, it's nice to have my sister only 3 miles away. The other sister
lives about 20 minutes away (near Mom). I lived in North Carolina for 5
years and that was hard to be away from everyone. I'm glad to be back here.

Thank you. I like it here too. I'm kind of a homebody at this
point... I've been most everywhere but am no longer interested in going
anywhere. Sometimes weeks go by and I don't set foot off this
property. And then mostly as far as I go is the seven mile round trip
into town, to the PO Box, bank, local market, whatever other places I
need to go... like this Tues. I will go into town to the dentist for my
routine cleaning/checkup. Once a month I become adventurous and head
towards Albany for my big shopping.

Sounds lovely. Too many think the entire state of NY consists entirely
of skyscrapers and slums. Let's not tell them how it really is.
