The problem with traveling

the problem with traveling is that when you leave you don't leave a whole lot
of food in the house and the food you did leave was left for the dog sitter to
eat so there's no food when you get back.

And your car is covered in snow and ice and you're too damned tired to go
scrape it and besides, you have to do laundry.

so you end up ordering pizza and your boyfriend grumbles at you from 1300
miles away because he wishes you would eat healthier...but you're so damned
tired and you just don't want to face the snow and ice...

he kept telling me there were cans of beans in the pantry and fresh spinach
and carrots to be dealt with, but i'd been up since 7:30, had to deal with
flight delays, getting stuck on the plane because the jetway couldn't reach
the door, almost missing my connecting flight, going from 75 degree weather to
snow on my car....whine whine whine!!! I deserve pepperoni!

But you know what makes it better? 2 dogs that missed me all curled up on me!

It hasn't arrived yet! I always feel bad for delivery guys when they show up
because it sunds like I have a pack of angry dogs in here. You can't really
tell them it's just 2 jackasses.

Today was better than my flight down. Left at 7, landed in memphis at 9am, had
a 5 HOUR layover that got extended another 90 minutes because the plane got
delayed in Detroit. Wanna know what there is to do at the Memphis
international airport? ****all! that's where there is to do.

I briefly considered catching a cab into town to do some shopping or SOMETHING
but I figured with the way my luck was going, I shouldn't tempt fate.

Oh kwitchyerbitchin! I was meandering on Lake Street this afternoon
without a coat. PO'd to find out Ingebretsen's wasn't open today. It's
nice weather for early January! Whiner!

I have not noticed that problem, but I don't have a dog so there's no
need for me to hire someone to watch my dog when I go away. Unless my
freezer dies on me, I usually have something decent to eat when I get
home from a long trip.

Ditto here. We almost always have something in the freezer or pantry that we
can whip up with minimal effort after arriving home from a trip. But we've
also been known to stop and pick up something along the way or get something
delivered. (Nothing wrong with ordering pizza after you arrive home from a
trip. After all, you're still sort of in "trip mode" at that point and
therefore can still eat whatever you like. Dieting/eating healthy begins the
*following* day. ;)

Our pet sitter visits our home on a daily basis when we're away (and doesn't
actually stay over at the house), so there's no danger of that person eating
our food.

And we don't have the snow/cold weather to deal with after getting home,
either. Nice to live where it's warm.

You should ignore your boyfriend's grumbles and not let him make you
feel guilty about what you eat.

We usually have traveled about 36 hours straight when we get back from
month-long vacations in India to Portland, Oregon with two kids in tow.
I clean out the refrigerator and freezer completely and just leave open
boxes of baking soda in them before leaving. So, we have to drag our
jet-lagged, tired selves to the grocery store as soon as we arrive to at
least get some milk, bread and a few other staples to feed the children
first(they tend to starve on flights!). Sometimes, one of our friends
remembers our return date and brings in the staples, which we gratefully
accept...

Yes, this is a problem with traveling. But meeting all the relatives
every couple of years and watch them bond with my children make it worth it.

(laughing) I'm sorry, but I could have told you that. Thank goodness I
only have to fly out of and back into it, rather than connecting through it!

Don't have that problem, but I do have to go to the vet to pick up the cat
and the bird. I'm usually too tired (or it's too late in the day) to do
that when I return.

No ice here but I feel your pain! I try to do at least one load of laundry
while I'm away, even if it means just washing up some things in the hotel
sink.

Sounds like you were gone a long time!

Canned lentil soup and crackers should hit the spot without much
effort.

Anyway, pizza once in a while is fine. Eat healthier from then on for

I actually had to buy a book at the airport. I'd finished the last unread book
in my house and I had packed a couple more to read, but I just was not in the
mood for them. I bought the very thick Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, I'm
not all that impressed.

I also got on to the airport wifi and emailed people, posted to my webiste and
entertained myself that way.

I was gone wednesday through monday and I had cleaned things out pretty well
and left notes for the dogsitter to eat this and that so it would not go bad.
I do try to eat better, and normally I am not so bad, but if I get lazy i get
lazy in really unhealthy ways.

Hope I've clipped and accredited this correctly!

Want to know what there is to do at Lima Airport in Peru? SFA,
particularly in the departure "lounge" a misnomer if ever there was
one. We were flying to Cuzco and duly left, flew for almost an hour
and got to the expected arrival time when I noticed out the window
that the scenery looked very familiar, and very close. I'm sure I've
seen that coastline before. Come to think of it, those fishing boats
look awfully close, considering we're flying inland.

We land at an airport, fire engines and ambulances racing alongside
the plane. Was I scared? No, ignorance is bliss and I didn't even
realise there was a problem with our plane. We landed back in Lima
having burned off fuel for an emergency landing. All announcements
were in Spanish and when we traipsed back into the terminal we had no
idea what was happening or had happened. (Later found out there was a
problem with the wings (ailerons, too lazy to look up the spelling,
sorry) of the plane that prevented us from gaining altitude. Saw them
trying to sellotape the wings together before abandoning that idea and
ordering in a new plane).

Hours passed. Our group of 17 friends travelling together were still
wondering what was going on. Being a smoker and the terminal was
non-smoking, I finally rebelled. I marched up to an armed guard (we
don't have many guns in NZ, so we find guns scary) and demanded, in
English, to be released from my confinement so I could go and have a
smoke. No problem. I just had to sign an exit form and raced outside
to smoke up large.

Getting back inside was no problem either. Signed back in, back to
non-smoking and more waiting. We took off six hours later.

hmmm, it's well written and all that, and it does have some fascinating
moments. I'm only about 1/3 through it right now and I keep expecting
something more interesting. I think part of the problem is that the story
takes place in early 19th century england and so I am reminded of Oscar Wilde
and Jane Austen and all those other writers and period pieces I can't stand.
There's so much drawing room etiquette and ladies being proper that I fear I
shall be driven quite mad...SEE!!!

It's actually not bad, just not as riveting as I had hoped it would be, but
since it is the only unread book I own, i will stick with it.

I love Jane Austen. I love the humour in her books and the gentle
rebellion. However, for the most part I read best-sellers,
unintellectual books.

It's not quite Jane Austen, she had more comedy in her stuff. More 'comedy of
errors' situations. This is really more of that period but not funny, really.

I don't know, I have such weird taste in books I might not be the best critic.
I just think more STUFF should be happening, especially if it's that damned
thick.

The saying around Northwest Airlines is that they had three hubs:
Motown (Detroit), Snowtown (Minneapolis/St. Paul), and Notown
(Memphis). Based on a business trip I once took to the Memphis
airport (my business was _at_ the airport), I'd have to agree.

I live in minneapolis and that makes it hard to find non-northwest flights out
of town that are cheap. Myy dad was a pilot for NWA and one day i shamefully
admitted I hated flying Northwest for a million reasons. He lit up, he totally
agreed and if it weren't for the cheap flights he got, he wouldn't fly NWA
either!

Agreed. I used to work there, too (not as a pilot, though I _was_
licensed as a flight attendant for a year -- long story). It amazes
me that management thinks it can be "the airline of choice" for
fliers at the same time it's continually kicking their employees in
the butt. Flying on other airlines was an absolute revelation. I
don't want to see NWA disappear, but I have to say they're nothing
to be proud of anymore.
